Cancellation of contract

I rang to cancel my account on 25/03/23 (in time for no cancellation fees) but Virgin failed to action this so I had to call back on 7 April. I have just received bill for next month. It’s an outrage that I can’t cancel without so much hassle.  I just spoke to customer service who tried to cancel service from 25 April ie one month notice but they said it errored and can’t do that! What can I do to escalate this?
