It's my understanding that, when enabled, WPS can be remotely brute forced, allowing unauthorized access to a Wi-Fi network.
Are there any contingencies in place for Virgin Media routers to avert or mitigate such attacks? And can WPS be disabled?

You should be able to turn off WPS via the admin interface on the VM hub (something like Advanced Settings>>Wireless>>WPS depending on what hub you have).
You probably won't be missing out by disabling it. I have never found it a very reliable method to make a wireless connection.

WPS is the first thing I turn off and it’s never used.
