Can I connect an access point to Hub 5 without putting it in modem mode?

I'm a bit new to home networking so I'm not 100% sure I'm understanding what I'm reading online.

Here's my setup and what I'm planning to do:

- I have gigabit fibre. My Hub 5 is downstairs in my living room, serving adequate Wi-Fi to all of downstairs, but signal is a bit crap upstairs

- I'm going to run a cat 6 cable from the router up through the ceiling to an upstairs bedroom, and connect that to a new wireless Access Point, which should be able to provide good Wi-Fi upstairs

Is this setup possible? Where the virgin hub is still providing Wi-Fi, as well as the Access Point? Or do I need to put the hub in modem mode to do this? If so, should I connect another Access Point to the hub to provide Wi-Fi downstairs?

Any advice/ideas much appreciated.

Yes you can do exactly what you describe with the Hub 5 in Router mode i.e. ( Hub 5 < ---------- >  WiFi AP )

We have a Hub 3 in Router mode with 2 TP-LINK WiFi APs attached it works well, plus the access points are fully under our control.
