Here's our handy help page about using your Mobile abroad. Make sure you have updated your Mobile's settings ahead of travelling to ensure the SIM will work! (Particularly your APN settings.)

Just as you have mentioned being based in the states - have you activated the SIM in the UK ahead of using it abroad?
