Shared conduits and ducting

Tuning in

Hi

i have a five year old new build Passivhaus and currently use bt for copper. On fibrecable access for broadband.

Access to my house is via a pole, a wire drops down and crosses my garden in a conduit and then enters the house through a duct.

I see on the pole there are new virgin media boxes with wire coiled. They don’t look as they are doing anything yet.

Nothing shows up on the virgin site about a possible fibre upgrade in my area.

If it does happen can a virgin wire share my conduit and duct into my home without the need for further digging and drilling?  And can the bt junction box in my home be removed if necessary to make room for the virgin box(s)?  The point about the house being a passivhaus is that it relies on complete insulation and drilling a hole compromises that.

Hi timshep,

Thanks for coming back to us on this one.

This isn't something we can advise on I'm afraid as the position and location of the box could be affected by a number of things.

You'd be better off having a pre-installation survey which you can arrange through the Sales Team on 0800 183 1234. An engineer would come to the property and you can chat through your options then.

Many thanks,

In a small minority of cases VM utilises Openreach's ducts and poles, and this appears to be one of those cases.

VM is not allowed to remove another operator's equipment, and only Openreach can remove its box.

Hey @timshep,

Firstly welcome to the Community Forums and thanks for the post.

Glad to hear you are thinking of joining us. What @Roger_Gooner stated is correct, we do on occasion use other connection points if they are more accessible for our customers, we would not be able to guarantee how we would install your specific property until it comes to us actually doing so.

With regards to the box as well we would not be able to remove it as stated it is not owned by us, if you spoke to Openreach they would be able to look into doing so for you if the time arose where you needed it doing.

If you do want to let us know your interest in switching over to us, you can register it here.

Thanks. Joe

hi Joe

Thanks, that is helpful. One further question and this relates to the location of the optical network terminal. The space I am aiming to have the omt is fairly adjacent to the existing broadband box, sandwiched between the two power cables that come into the house. I have indicated this on the picture. Is this doable from your experience for space etc? There is a double power socket immediately  above this out of the photo.

thanks

Thanks, actually having a human looking at the issue directly would be very useful indeed. Not many isps offer this, so kudos to you for letting me know of the service,

Hi Kath,

I did call the number and spoke to a member of the sales team but I was told that I had to sign up for a service first before an engineer would call which is something I would not be prepared to do.

so I’m back to square one.
