Phone doesn't work on return from holiday

Why does my phone not connect to a good Wifi signal for a few hours after returning from abroad?

Yesterday I tried to connect to Wifi in the BA Lounge at Heathrow.  It showed as Connected but it wasn't - emails I wrote showed as 'Queued for later' and emails I knew had been sent to me weren't there.  Couldn't use the phone either.

Settings showed as being on Virgin.

Only after I'd got home over 2 hours later did emails and texts start moving in and out.

This was no help at all when I needed to phone someone on arrival at the airport.

 

This is the second time this has happened.  Last time I phoned Virgin from my landline only to be told this was because the phone thought I was still abroad.

When it happens it is a good idea to switch the phone off then on again. Then perform a manual network search and select Virgin. That should make sure it kicks in again.

Not only did I switch it off, I removed the battery and the Sim card.  My manual network search gave me Virgin, which it supposedly was happy to connect to.  But still did zilch.

If it is one of the new purple SIM cards try this

To Switch back when in the UK:
Select Apps from Home screen
Select Virgin SIM Toolkit Icon
Select Roaming
Select Select Mode
Select Automatic and go back to Home Screen

Seems they sometimes don't work via the normal route

will I be able to get into the App if there's no connection to any Wifi?

Should be able to get into your apps on the phone and search for SIM Toolkit. The SIM Toolkit is built into the new SIM so should not require a signal or connection.

This only works for SIMs issued in the last 13 months and are purple on the back

Ahhhh. That sounds promising. It is a purple Sim. I'll download the App now.

Thanks for your patience.

Will let you know how it goes in March. It hasn't been a problem when coming back from Europe, but from China in November and the States this week, it just didn't want to work.

Yesterday was the first time I went out since returning from hols and wanted to use my phone's internet. Had been on home router wifi before. No joy. Have tried your Toolkit suggestion, unfortunately. Phoned Virgin who went through all the Network selection etc but nothing. Phone calls and messages fine. But no mobile data connection. No icon showing for it either.
Virgin said to keep trying for 24 hours when they'll phone me back.

You can try texting ALL to 789922 

That resets the network settings
