Will A 3rd Party Router Help My Weird Network Issues?

For ages, I've been puzzled by things seem get confused or perform badly on my network. Poor/fluctuating ping times mainly, but also other stuff not related to speed, which is always reported to be good (I'm in North London BTW).

I also have a SuperHub 2, because when I first joined Virgin there was some incredibly weird problem with the SH3 and the model of my exchange hardware which meant that it kept cutting out so I had to downgrade. That was several years ago though.

Recently, I've been using this application which enables musicians to play together remotely in real time. It seems like my setup is probably responsible for a fair amount of latency.

Can anyone advise whether getting a 3rd party router might help?

Here's an overview of what I have and what I'm thinking of doing.

If that looks like a good idea, does anyone have any recommendations for a good router to use? Something like this or this perhaps?

Thanks for any help.

IS it a SHUB2 or SHUB2AC?

Forget about the router as it cannot help if your problems are to do with your hub or access network.

Can you post some stats. Go to 192.168.0.1, copy and paste the Downstream, Upstream and Network Logs. Mask any public IP address.

Re: Will A 3rd Party Router Help My Weird Network Issues?

You certainly had network lock failures on Wednesday, and I'd rather not see any Post RS errors or the somewhat high upstream power levels. Can you reboot your hub and post your stats and logs after a day. Also, what are your speeds with a wired connection using speedtest.net.

Re: Will A 3rd Party Router Help My Weird Network Issues?

OK thanks - will reboot and post tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I'm getting the following from speedtest.net this evening (before reboot):

PING ms 9
DOWNLOAD Mbps 111.60
UPLOAD Mbps 10.07

Doesn't seem too bad right now in fact.

Re: Will A 3rd Party Router Help My Weird Network Issues?

Speeds I'm now getting are

PING ms 10
DOWNLOAD Mbps 105.57
UPLOAD Mbps 10.03

However speed and ping times aren't the whole story with the performance issues I'm having. For example, one Virgin user I've seen has said they got better performance out of the app I've been using when they turned off "Block Fragmented IP Packets" - but that seems to be a SuperHub 3 thing. I get strange UDP failures to contact hosts and whatnot. Almost like some kinds of network activity are being throttled in some way.
