Do VM call you on mobile numbers now?

I had a missed call from a number starting 07810 751...

Followed by a text message "Hi please call John @ Virgin media on 07810 ..."

I called the official VM customer service number instead but no notes on my account as to someone wanting to get in touch with me, so assuming it's a scam for now. I'm not handing out personal details to a stranger on a mobile phone.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Did you contact the team at all recently before you received that text message? Did the text state why they were attempting to make contact?
