How soon can I sign up with Virgin for new build?

Hi Guys,

We have paid the deposit on a new build property with Linden Homes in Northstowe just north of Cambridge. The house will have a direct fibre connection which is rather exciting.

The house will be ready to move into in the spring 2018 and I know that Virgin Media are already part of the infrastructure as I have seen info about it on the district council planning website.

1. When can I register to make sure we are connected ASAP? I work form home and will probably choose a business account.
2. Will there be specialist packages for houses with a direct fibre connection?

Hope you can help. Smiley Happy

It is certainly an exciting period and glad to hear everything goes as expected Smiley Happy I went for plot 3 as it will be our first house.

Indeed, in theory it can achieve amazing speeds but it depends if the rest of the infrastructure is in place and how busy the network will be etc.. I guess I will find out soon enough, I will make sure to update here.

Re: How soon can I sign up with Virgin for new build?

Virgin Media have a lot of problems with new build orders (I'm having fun myself!), part of how smoothly this will go will depend on how the developers work with Virgin Media. They will also be in the best place to tell you how work is progressing, since they have to give Virgin Media permission to access the site.

Virgin Media as an organisation are also very bad at tracking the status of new build works, probably because it's all on completely different systems. To give you a taste of the fun, some of their teams were insisting there are no plans for a service in my area, when there is a Virgin Media cabinet being commissioned 10 metres from my doorstep and all the ducting and cabling already pre-wired and in place. And the development has a live service.

Consumer packages do not offer a direct fibre connection, even in the newer areas where Virgin are building with fibre. For compatibility with existing kit, it is converted to coax at the edge of the property. I believe business connections use fibre directly, but don't quote me on that one.

The community team might be able to give you some help if you've got details of the development, but you're probably best speaking to the developers themselves.

Re: How soon can I sign up with Virgin for new build?

Hmmmmm that's not good. Hopefully you get sorted soon and we don't have this issue.

My wife works from home part time and I do full time.

How do you get by? 4G dongle?

BT and Virgin are going to be available so I'll just have to choose the one who gets their act together first. Smiley Happy I'm not a BT fan so hopefully Virgin will be getting our business.

Re: How soon can I sign up with Virgin for new build?

I'm using 4G as a backup for the time being, but fingers crossed they'll have completed the work and released the addresses in the next week or so.

I don't really have much of a choice as BT for some reason put a brand new PCP cabinet outside the development, but didn't bother to run fibre to it, so no FTTC/FoD or anything.

Some developments are better than others it appears. It was only the other day my address was added to the VM database, as they insisted the postcode was invalid.

All the best, hope you have better luck!

Thanks. I'll call them as I know business accounts have a significant priority over regular punters.

Re: How soon can I sign up with Virgin for new build?

We moved to a new build in Jan 2016, Virgin cables were laid at the start of the build. The week before we moved we called Virgin, they could locate the address of the new house straight away, they sent an engineer the day after we moved in, and it's been all fine since.

Re: How soon can I sign up with Virgin for new build?

Hi Brooky_agb,

Do you know what speeds they will be offering? Will it be fibre to home?

I was told as well that Virgin will be available from November but when I called Virgin they said they cannot confirm anything until the house is built and they have it in their systems.

Thanks
