Upgraded from 600mbps to 1000mbps no change in speed

I have upgraded from 600 Mbps to 1000mbps and am still only getting around 300mbps. Just looking for advice regarding whether I should have been given a new router and whether virgin should have done anything there side to turn up the speed. Cheers
