I'm experiencing network issues on fibre optic broadband

Hello,

 

I am experiencing an odd network issue

1. Browser pages randomly will get infinite loading bars and fail to properly load despite usually loading quickly.

2. FFXIV will have a consistent start/stop lag every 3 seconds, as if packet loss but very consistent. I can move around fine but other players while running will stop in place, then surf forward in a consistent manner.

3. Rocket league and Overwatch, however, appear to work completely fine with nothing unusual on network monitors.

4. I appear to have a lot of 3.0 downstream channel Pre RS errors

How to get stats from a VM hub (no need to logon to the hub)

Open a web browser and go to 192.168.0.1 router mode or 192.168.100.1 modem mode

  • Click on the “> Check router status” button
  • Click on the “Downstream” tab, copy the text and paste into your reply, do not take a screen shot
  • Click on the “Upstream” tab, copy the text and paste into your reply
  • Click on the “Networking” tab, copy the text and paste into your reply.
    • Do NOT post photos or screen shots they will be rejected as they contain MAC addresses. The board software will automatically change MAC addresses to **:** if done as above.

thankyou i recently restarted my router and check all the connections to the outside box. The cable does look as if it could be crimped in some areas but im not sure (the cable is bent at nearly 90degrees angle around some corners)

The upstream power levels look high to me and I would call them in as a fault on 0345 454 1111/ 150.

I'm not a Very Insightful Person (just a little bit, sometimes). I don't work for Virgin Media (but then nor do any of the offshore customer service agents).

Use hub in modem mode get a better router with 1Gb ports

Technically you aren't on 'fibre optic broadband', you are using VM's HFC (Hybrid fibre coax) network at a minimum where you have a coax connection from the local cabinet, maybe RFoG (radio frequency over glass), where fibre connection terminates at the wall box on the outside of your home, which is then converted to coax, or, more recently, the fibre is converted to coax on the inside of your home.

But still, there is a reliance on power levels and 'noise' on your line which can disrupt your connection.

In this case the HUB stats don't look too bad, DOCSIS 3.0 upstream power levels are a touch high.

It's the T3 time-out errors that indicate an problem, maybe check for local issues (select 'still having issues' if nothing comes back).

hello thankyou for the clarification, i'm not sure which step specifically fixed my issue, but i swapped my hub to modem mode and performed a factory reset, it seems to have resolved the issue.
