VM is trialling smart security for hub 5 to provide extra security to safeguard connected devices.

This security is managed by the Connect app, but I couldn't get this app to connect to my hub even my phone is a few feet away.

Not much use if you run in modem mode.

Correct, but if you run your own router you know that you're on your own.

It looks to me an anti-virus plus perhaps an upgraded firewall.

There is a special section on it in the app's Faqs if curious. 

I'm not a Very Insightful Person (just a little bit, sometimes). I don't work for Virgin Media (but then nor do any of the offshore customer service agents).
