Why is the customer service so bad?

After a steep increase I cancelled my service and booked Sky then I was offered a very good deal, after cancelling Sky I have tried to contact Virgin to accept the new package, after waiting 4 hours yesterday and 3 hours today I am at the point of giving up and going back to Sky, when I had to phone Sky they answered within 2 minutes and dealt with my query without transferring or requesting I used chat or Whattsapp, why don't Virgin look at Sky and copy their customer service model?
