Bang & Olufsen Beocom 2 and 6000 not working

Following our landline switch over to the Virgin fibre digital service last Thursday our B&O cordless phones can make outgoing calls but prevent any incoming calls. They do not ring and any incoming call fails without being diverted to voicemail. The Virgin engineer who did the switchover did a good job cabling to the upstairs router but was at a loss to explain the fault. Another engineer who subsequently attended was also unable to help. Because of age and health concerns we are classed as ‘vulnerable’ yet Virgin have been singularly unhelpful to date; they have left us with no cordless phones and never highlighted this risk prior to the switchover.

Can anyone help with getting our phones working?

  • Good news. I sent the BeoLine Base Station and one of our Beocom 6000's to the Vintage Telephony guy (https://www.vintagetelephony.co.uk) and he dismantled the base station and apparently played around with it by inserting a resistor and after a process of tuning to the right impedance he got it to work. I've plugged in the BeoLine, connected all three B&O Beocoms and the BeoLine to the wired Tel1 VM socket box and they all work! He did a great job and I thoroughly recommend him.

I am writing to raise a formal complaint regarding the analogue telephone service provided via the TEL1 port on my Virgin Media Hub.

Despite extensive testing, this service is incompatible with my Bang & Olufsen analogue telephone base station. While the line provides a stable dial tone and allows outgoing calls, incoming calls are not received by the B&O system.

I have carried out structured diagnostics to eliminate wiring faults, REN loading, and equipment failure. These tests show that:

    - The TEL1 port can ring multiple conventional analogue telephones reliably

    - The Bang & Olufsen base can make outgoing calls reliably

    - Incoming call signalling from TEL1 is rejected by the B&O base even when connected directly with no internal wiring involved

This demonstrates a signalling incompatibility originating within the Virgin Media Hub’s analogue (VoIP-derived) telephone interface.

I am requesting that Virgin Media:

    - Acknowledge this incompatibility as a limitation of the TEL1 service, and

    - Advise what remedies are available, including any alternative supported solutions for customers using high-quality analogue telephone equipment.

Please confirm receipt of this complaint advise how this matter will be progressed.

I would politely suggest you are not going to get very far with trying to engage VM with your B&O phone problem.

Best I can recall from similar 'phone-not-working-after-switchover' topics in the past is that VM made a (very small) credit contribution towards the cost of a new phone (after a lot of complaining by the customer).

What happened with 'Vintage Telephony'? Did you give up on that route?

I thought I’d explore all DIY hardware options first before I send one of the handsets/charger & base station to Mr Vintage Telephony. So far I’ve tried a B&O installation engineer, an ATA solution (post TEL1 connection, but not with a ported VoIP provider), re-configuring the handsets/base station, plugging the base station directly into TEL1… all without success.

You don't have a leg to stand on. Nobody is going to gurantee that all legacy equipment will work with new systems. The old Beocom 2 and 6000 expect analogue line characteristics that VM’s VoIP ATA doesn’t fully replicate. and I'd expect the same results with several other VoIP operators. Just buy a modern phone.

Glad to hear you got it working in the end. Your feedback now makes two people who have had success with Vintage Telephony who have reported on here. This will be useful for anyone else who has a similar issue with the B&O phones on here in the future.
