360 remote - Volume control doesnt work with HDMI audio splitter

The volume control doesnt work on my 360 remote

The tv box is plugged into an HDMI audio splitter that sends video to my projector and audio to my speakers

this setup works fine with my Chromecast but I cannot control volume when I use the virgin tv box

There dont seem to be any audio options that help me,
I dont want to pair the remote to a device, I want to change the volume that is outputted by the tv box

The 360 remote only controls the TV or Soundbar volume when paired to these devices as it uses IR and needs line of sight to work, if you have both paired to the 360 you can then go to:

Settings, Audio & Video and use the Volume keys control to switch between the TV and amp.
