VM O2 account linking ...secondary email account

I understand the need for improved login security these days but this whole switchover to VMO2 accounts has been done without any consideration for customers - a blanket email announcement to all VM customers a month or so ago would've been nice.

My issue is that I have a secondary (blueyonder) email address that I have now also linked to VMO2 (along with my primary address) but, before allowing me to login to webmail, it is requiring me to link that 2nd email to my main VM account (when it asks for account no., area ref & surname  etc)

I am concerned that if I now link the secondary address to my VM acc. it will swap/disconnect the existing (and working) link from my primary email address ..or will it just add it?

Has anyone here successfully linked more than one VMO2 account to a single main VM acc?

Also, this only seems to be an issue for logging into webmail in a browser  - as Mail apps on iphone/ipad/Windows/Mac  (with original IMAP settings) are still working.

Am happy to NOT use webmail temporarily if VMO2 are planning to revert to a simpler login method - can a moderator please confirm what or if there are any plans for this?

Thanks. T

I have been unable to access my e-mails for five days, three times contacting the call centre in Asia (at phone number 150) to no avail. When I log on to 'Sign in/Register and enter my e-mail address to "get started" and hit the 'NEXT' button, I am informed "we have sent you a link (which will expire in 10 minutes). This is the height of absurdity, as I cannot access my account to retrieve that 'link'. One of the e-mails I need to see urgently, is from HM Government, regarding a new passport. I have tried to phone VM HQ in Reading, but the phone rings continuously for want of anything but a BOT to pick it up. If I am unable to complete the passport procedure by accessing my account, I will sue Virgin for egregious breach of contract. Can some intelligent person restore access to me e-mail account.  Of course, I will be unable to see any e-mail reply to this message, but I can be contacted by phone - landline [REMOVED]. I do not possess a mobile phone and have no intention to purchase one.

I am having exactly the same issue, as I suspect many others are. My wife and I have both used blueyonder email for over 20 years with me as the the vm account owner.  We both use webmail. With the introduction of vmo2 IDs, I can still access my account and emails but my wife can't. Exactly as the OP states, when she tries to login she is asked to link to the vm account but I am hugely concerned that this will remove access from me and give it to my wife where we want and need both. I simply do not know how to get round this and neither does vm online chat  'support'. Also we do not know her app password and can't change it without her being able to login so can't access her emails through a 3rd party email client. So we're well and truly snookered. Can anyone help?

It seems that it's currently not possible to access secondary sub-accounts via webmail while another account (email address) 'VMO2 ID' is set as the main login .

AlthoughI haven't tried this yet but it should be possible to temporarily swap the VM ccount login ID to your secondary account (once linked to O2 and your VM account).
You could then view your emails via webmail and/or change your Mail app password  ..then switch the account back to use your primary email login / ID?

As it stands, only one address can be accessed via webmail while other secondary/third etc sub-accounts would have to use mail apps.

Can Daniel_Et or other Forum Team member investigate this further ..and maybe push for a change to allow multiple VMo2 IDs on the the same VM home account.  🙏

Did you get any joy from @Daniel_Et? I spent another fruitless hour on chat to vm support and got absolutely nowhere.

  • Hi tufftee, thank you for your post.

We're sorry to hear about the issue you've been having 😔 Are you any further forward with this since posting?

In the event that you're not, we'll send you a private message on here. Look out for the envelope in the top right-hand corner.

Thanks Daniel, I've not moved further with this as I am reluctant to link the secondary email (sub account) address to my VM account no. as I don't want to risk losing the primary account connection.

To confirm, this is a sub-account (not an alias email) that also needs to be linked to the account holder VM account  ..as well as the primary account (which is working); is this possible?
I'm just nervous about suddenly losing access to either email.

(currently using webmail for primary and Mail app (IMAP) access for secondary)

My normal advice for anyone who has access to their email, is to archive it off and move to a non ISP tied mail service.  Yes, it's a real pain, but worth it in the long run.

I started a comprehensive reply to this that seems to have disappeared into the ether.  Here's a shorter summary in case it doesn't reappear.

Main warnings about what the security update seems to be driving at:

    • On a web browser, logging in to the account is a special case, as logging in to this is now the route to the primary email (via a button once logged in).  No direct web access to the primary email.
    • Need to use unique third-party email addresses for the usernames of the account and any secondary emails.
    • Usernames need to be in current domains.  While the Blueyonder email addresses persist, we can't use them for new usernames.  But they are still working for usernames until the update is enforced.
    • Where a login changes to a new username, a new password is required, which is associated with the new username not the email address.
    • Third-party app (IMAP) access (on the phone) then uses a separate code that I believe can only be requested via web access using the new username and password.
    • With the VMO2 ID, getting to a consistent situation seems to involve a) using one unique third-party email address for the username of the VMO2 ID, the VM account and the O2 account, and b) then re-linking the two accounts to the VMO2 ID.

The order in which we do things seems to be critical in some cases.

I set a new username for my secondary Blueyonder email, which worked ok in isolation.  Requested a third-party app code for IMAP access on the phone which also worked (and still does).

Called customer services who said use a third-party address for the account (and primary email), without making it crystal clear it had to be different from the one for the secondary email.  That worked for the account but the secondary email lost web access.  A second call to customer services made it clear they don't currently have a fix for this.  But I then managed to sort out the VMO2 ID online as in the warnings above.  Note the VMO2 ID log in also gives you the option to change the VMO2 ID username, by not using the one currently set (it doesn't explain this clearly).

Note to VM: please urgently establish a verified process for senior customer service agents, at customer request, to change a username and trigger a password reset, for the customer to implement without giving away their old or new passwords.  Provide clear help online and during calls to enable customers to prep and execute this process.  Allow for secondary email users not to be account holders by involving the latter as needed.

You need to use a different VMO2 ID for each secondary account.  You should use the same username email as you were using for the secondary My Virgin Media account before the new system was implemented.

Speaking as a Blueyonder email user.

The VMO2 ID is for the account, i.e. you need to link it to the account.

Logging in to the account with the linked VMO2 ID also gives access to the primary email, via the email button.  Open another tab and go to log in if you want the account page open as well as the primary email.

There are no secondary "accounts".  Secondary emails have their own username, distinct from the VMO2 ID username.

        Rich17,

The problem is the secondary emails have been forced to create VMO2 IDs, now when you try to login to the secondary email, it forces you to link the secondary email address to the primary account.

  • Hi T

I have the same issue, i fear if i link the secondary account I will loose access.

Can you confirm you can access the emails of the secondary account via other apps ??

    Thanks

Yes, I can confirm secondary account emails are still accessible via 'Mail' apps on Windows, iPhone,iPad & Macbook - I've not had to change anything on those devices, they are still using the app password set on that account about 2 years ago.

I just can't get into the secondary email account via browser webmail.  🙁

...also, without access to this account via 'My VirginMedia'  I cannot change or request a new app password.

      Please fix this VM.
