VM O2 account linking ...secondary email account

I understand the need for improved login security these days but this whole switchover to VMO2 accounts has been done without any consideration for customers - a blanket email announcement to all VM customers a month or so ago would've been nice.

My issue is that I have a secondary (blueyonder) email address that I have now also linked to VMO2 (along with my primary address) but, before allowing me to login to webmail, it is requiring me to link that 2nd email to my main VM account (when it asks for account no., area ref & surname  etc)

I am concerned that if I now link the secondary address to my VM acc. it will swap/disconnect the existing (and working) link from my primary email address ..or will it just add it?

Has anyone here successfully linked more than one VMO2 account to a single main VM acc?

Also, this only seems to be an issue for logging into webmail in a browser  - as Mail apps on iphone/ipad/Windows/Mac  (with original IMAP settings) are still working.

Am happy to NOT use webmail temporarily if VMO2 are planning to revert to a simpler login method - can a moderator please confirm what or if there are any plans for this?

Thanks. T

My normal advice for anyone who has access to their email, is to archive it off and move to a non ISP tied mail service.  Yes, it's a real pain, but worth it in the long run.

  • I started a comprehensive reply to this that seems to have disappeared into the ether.  Here's a shorter summary in case it doesn't reappear.

Main warnings about what the security update seems to be driving at:

    • On a web browser, logging in to the account is a special case, as logging in to this is now the route to the primary email (via a button once logged in).  No direct web access to the primary email.
    • Need to use unique third-party email addresses for the usernames of the account and any secondary emails.
    • Usernames need to be in current domains.  While the Blueyonder email addresses persist, we can't use them for new usernames.  But they are still working for usernames until the update is enforced.
    • Where a login changes to a new username, a new password is required, which is associated with the new username not the email address.
    • Third-party app (IMAP) access (on the phone) then uses a separate code that I believe can only be requested via web access using the new username and password.
    • With the VMO2 ID, getting to a consistent situation seems to involve a) using one unique third-party email address for the username of the VMO2 ID, the VM account and the O2 account, and b) then re-linking the two accounts to the VMO2 ID.

The order in which we do things seems to be critical in some cases.

I set a new username for my secondary Blueyonder email, which worked ok in isolation.  Requested a third-party app code for IMAP access on the phone which also worked (and still does).

Called customer services who said use a third-party address for the account (and primary email), without making it crystal clear it had to be different from the one for the secondary email.  That worked for the account but the secondary email lost web access.  A second call to customer services made it clear they don't currently have a fix for this.  But I then managed to sort out the VMO2 ID online as in the warnings above.  Note the VMO2 ID log in also gives you the option to change the VMO2 ID username, by not using the one currently set (it doesn't explain this clearly).

Note to VM: please urgently establish a verified process for senior customer service agents, at customer request, to change a username and trigger a password reset, for the customer to implement without giving away their old or new passwords.  Provide clear help online and during calls to enable customers to prep and execute this process.  Allow for secondary email users not to be account holders by involving the latter as needed.

You need to use a different VMO2 ID for each secondary account.  You should use the same username email as you were using for the secondary My Virgin Media account before the new system was implemented.

Speaking as a Blueyonder email user.

The VMO2 ID is for the account, i.e. you need to link it to the account.

Logging in to the account with the linked VMO2 ID also gives access to the primary email, via the email button.  Open another tab and go to log in if you want the account page open as well as the primary email.

There are no secondary "accounts".  Secondary emails have their own username, distinct from the VMO2 ID username.

        Rich17,

The problem is the secondary emails have been forced to create VMO2 IDs, now when you try to login to the secondary email, it forces you to link the secondary email address to the primary account.

  • Hi T

I have the same issue, i fear if i link the secondary account I will loose access.

Can you confirm you can access the emails of the secondary account via other apps ??

    Thanks

Yes, I can confirm secondary account emails are still accessible via 'Mail' apps on Windows, iPhone,iPad & Macbook - I've not had to change anything on those devices, they are still using the app password set on that account about 2 years ago.

I just can't get into the secondary email account via browser webmail.  🙁

...also, without access to this account via 'My VirginMedia'  I cannot change or request a new app password.

      Please fix this VM.
