Roaming in Ireland and the cost of receiving calls

I live in Ireland and travel to the UK frequently. I need a UK mobile number that I can receive calls with back home in Ireland that has either low or no charges for receiving incoming (roaming) calls. I'm thinking of getting a Virgin PAYG phone and I would like to confirm what charges apply for receiving incoming (roaming calls). The information available suggests that these are free, but I want to confirm this in advance before proceeding.

Thanks indeed for that. Are Virgin PAYG sim cards available from any large retailers?

Re: Roaming in Ireland and the cost of receiving calls

Hi skyperr,

I would say so. They are certainly available in my local Tesco and Asda.

Even my local corner shop sells a selection of SIM's from various networks.

Three Mobile UK - No roaming charges between Irish Republic and UK

Don't know if the same deal goes for Three Ireland

Re: Roaming in Ireland and the cost of receiving calls

3 UK will only work on 3 Ireland as part of their "3 Like Home" tariffs if you have PAYG with one of their packages which start from around £20 a month. If you just use straightforward PAYG (the £1 SIM card) and just top up are normal, you don't get the benefit of 3 Like Home. They are not clear about this and I only found out by chance when I queried it in a 3 store.

Re: Roaming in Ireland and the cost of receiving calls

My Three PAYG works on 'At Home'. Used it in France and Spain quite recently. I paid 99p for the SIM and as I use Wifi to make many of my calls, I top up around £5 per month.

You can't use it permanently in an At Home country as it is meant for tourists, but it is the only one I know where you won't get clobbered by Roaming charges.

End of June next year all roaming charges are abolished in the EU. (One more reason to stay in!)
