Why can't I just set a reminder as I did with my old Virgin+ box. Does anyone else find it annoying?

Hello,

I'm new to Tivo and I have to say I quite like most of it.

However, and its a big however, I find the so called reminder function useless to say the least. Its crazy that I have to set it to record and remind, when all I want is a reminder box to pop up so that I can decide to watch or record or not bother. The old Virgin+ box could be set with multiple reminders and it was so simple. No fuss.

With this Tivo I have to go through my recordings every day to delete the biggest load of rubbish that seems to get recorded, when all I wanted was to be informed a programme was about to start and nothing more.

Please Virgin can you get an update put in that also gives us the option of reminders only, without recording.

TiVo isn't and has never been designed for reminders. Not from the Series 1 days over 10 years ago, right through to the latest versions TiVo are releasing in the US. VM have however caved to public demand and asked TiVo to implement reminders, which has been done in the only way possible to still retain the functionality of everything else in the box.

Unlike the V+HD box, which had a dedicated tuner specifically for watching TV, (plus 2 more for recording 2 shows at once) TiVo has 3 tuners, all of which can be used to record. This additional recording capabilty is where the TiVo shines, and it's also why reminders can never be the same as V+HD.

If you set a reminder on V+HD and you don't want to record the show, then that's fine - the dedicated TV watching tuner just switches to the programme and any other recordings continue in the background. If you did the same on TiVo, because all of the tuners could be scheduled to record something else at the same time as your reminded show, then there would be no tuner free to watch what you've set a reminder for.

To get around this, and to ensure that there's a tuner free for you to actually watch the show, the simplest way to implement reminders (without months and months and months of work redesigning the very core logic TiVo is built on), is to set the show to record. This recording show then goes into the schedule with all the other recordings, but takes priority over anything else that might clash with it.

If there is a clash TiVo does what it's been designed to do from the outset, and shuffles around the other planned recordings, picking another one from the schedule to record at a later date.

Hopefully that makes some sort of sense....

Thanks Dannylau,

That was a heck of an answer and I appreciate it very much. I understand what you mean and I suppose I'll just have to get used to it, even though I'm not a happy camper about it.

So I'm off to the Tivo to delete 3 days of unwanted recordings.

Thanks again,

Antony.

I agree with all that has been said about the lack of just a reminder function on the Tivo box. Why can't we have the option of going back to the Virgin V+HD box, it is a much nicer box to use. My wife hates the Tivo box and has already told me to cancel the contract as soon as the contract ends! Please Virgin help with the option of having the old V+HD box!!

You will not get a V+ HD back.

There will be a new box, the V6, coming at some stage but it will, at least initially, be based on the current TiVo interface.

If you really can't learn to love the TiVo interface then your options are limited.

There is no question of going back now. The Sammy V+HD went out of production a year before the London Olympics. Virgin have been refurbishing the ones left on the system ever since, with somewhat mixed results. The middleware platform these boxes run on had capacity problems since before the last Olympics, & could not go on without significant investment. Virgin decided to go in another direction & go into partnership with TiVO producers Cisco. V+HD boxes that are swapped out are now going in the recycle bin, & the prices for taking the TiVO are dropping. I've still got my V+HD boxes (which were some of the last new ones to come off production) but I know an upgrade has to be on the cards pretty soon

SkyQ doesn't offer reminders at all!

Re: Why can't I just set a reminder as I did with my old Virgin+ box. Does anyone else find it annoying?

Yeah same problem plus a load more.

Seems dumb that a reminder cannot be set without recording a program, it just means i have to delete programs for every reminder which is pointless.

Also everything seems abit clunky in operation, far more steps to do even the simplest things and it makes an annoying beep on every input.

As i've only imherited this box due to a HD recorder box having intermittent problems i may just plug the old box back in and put up with the intermittent freezing i was having.

Also the old box looked much better under the TV with its round blue light rather than this ugly curved thing i cannot put anything on top of.

New tech should be better than the old, simpler and more intuative to use, be hey Cisco are a business networking hardware supplier not a consumer electronics specialist so no surprise there then.

I bet the quote per unit was lower.

Good job im not paying extra for this substandard machine.

I agree with all the comments that I should decide what and when I record not the Tivo box.

Added to that, I see there is a 'Suggestions' folder which seems to accumulate totally random shows - how do I turn that off?

I tried using the thumbs up/down buttons to influence it, but, that seems to make no difference

What exactly are the thumb buttons for?

On the positive side, series links recordings are great!
