VM Tivo - actual broadcast resolution? 720p, 1080p, 1080i? 1020

Hi,

Just signed up for Virgin this morning - installation in a month or so.

But Sky *when I phoned to cancel) say that the resolution of the Tivo box is lower than their HD offering (1080i).

It's really hard to find proper information about the differences so what's the deal?  HD is important to me (I have a large TV) but 4K is irrelevant for the time being.

SKy have got me worried that I've just signed up to a cheaper but very inferior service?

Robin

I've recently signed up as well and yes 1080i is available but the quality of the HD is worse than freeview, Sky and BT TV.

Technicians are looking into mine but if you search google you will see others making similar comments

I've still got time to cancel. Do you suggest I do? I'm saving around £200 per year on the next best deal from sky./bt but is it worth it?

Well some say the HD is really good, so am unsure. It may be a bit of luck in terms of whether you get good reception based on factors I have no idea about lol

yes, cancel. My Tivo service is laughable. On Demand and Catchup have long bouts of non existence. VM just time waste by asking you to reboot constantly, and they wont entertain the idea of compensation. Awful company run by awful management. As for 1080, that'll be the least of your worries

mine works fine and the HD TV channels + Netflix are at 1080. Netflix is slow to load, minutes on Tivo vs seconds on a tablet but once it's loaded, the shows work OK

Netflix I can do with other platforms (Chromecast, X-Box etc) - it's Sky Sports, BT Sports and a few series on BBC that we'd be using it for. What's the picture quality like on those? I have a BIG screen. Sky HD looks pretty good - dreadful in SD. Resolution is only half the story - bandwidth available to the stream is the other or you get blocking in motion-heavy scenes.

Re: VM Tivo - actual broadcast resolution? 720p, 1080p, 1080i? 1020

well  it looks as good as 1080 looks on a big screen is all. I don't have a 4k screen so no upscaling. there's less bandwidth in a cable/satellite transmission than via  blu ray disc but you need good eyes and a big screen to pick out the differences

in Mb,  netflix super HD , TV HD streams at ~5 ( on the best channels) - bu ray can go up to ~20

to my eyes, on  a 48 inch curved Samsung TV , Tivo - Freeview HD - smart hub netflix /amazon video  - all look to be same quality

AFAIK, what comes down the cable to Tivo, for say BBC HD, is identical to what comes via the aerial, and probably to what you get from a satellite. Google would know the actual data rates..

i don't have a sat dish but I would expect sky sports / BT sport HD via Tivo to be identical to those same channels  via satellite...

of course, in real life you can get a poor satellite view or a congested Tivo cable....

no uk broadcaster is doing > 1080 yet. If you look at 4k specs you need huge screen + get close up + good source material to see the extra benefit of that. A crap show, or a boring live match  is still crap even with a few million extra  pixels. The blades of grass may look more interesting but some footie teams will still put you to sleep Smiley Happy
