Vivid 200 Gamer Upgrade 6 Dec - go slow in the evenings & weekends

Hi,

On 6 Dec I upgraded to Vivid 200 Gamer which included a Hub 3.0. I was @home on 7th December and got 200 mb/s over a direct wired connection - well happy - but noticed from 6pm onwards the speed drops down and by 8pm it's down to 10mb/s  and doesn't go up again until early in the morning.  The upstream is pretty solid around 20mb/s usually around 17-20mb/s in the evenings.  At the weekend fell back to 20mb/s on average. so I'm getting 10% or less. This behaviour seems pretty predictable (ie evening use of internet is painfully slow).

Why is the speed dipping down in the evenings and weekends? Surely with paying a premium for this service it shouldn't be dipping down so far away from 200mb/s ?

Any ideas ? Given that the wired connection produces full speed early in the morning or at times during the day - I don't think there is a line/equipment issue.

That sounds like over utilization - has a 1-2 year fix date from when it gets reported.

Same problem Mate..Tippical Virgin..Promissing and never will be fix!
Waiting more than half year to be fix..
No way ..Still changing time and date for upgrade .
Just stealing money from customer..Nothing else!
80 % custommers are unhappy.
Virgin doesnt care ..
Just stupidly promissing!
Thats all.

This doesn't sound very promising.

Sounds like over-promising (and selling) to me. Especially with those upgrade contract lock-ins.

Virgin broadband is EXPENSIVE if you can't get reasonable speeds but getting 10mb/s is going back to ADSL speeds...and about 10 years!

How can virgin publish average speeds of 180mb/s www.virginmedia.com/traffic if there are these utilisation issues.

Just also wondering if anyone here has signed up for samknows ?

Might be a good idea if there are contention/utilisation issues ....

Ok, so I called Virgin, got through to Technical support (eventually) and they could see exactly what speed the line was getting and when.

There is a capacity issue in the area, but can't help but feel Virgin 'over sold' and 'under delivered'.

Even with a service rebate for the lack of speed during evenings and weekends, to sweeten the bitterness a little.

Work underway to remediate - should be fixed by March 2017 - will believe that when I see it!

Smiley Sad

Phone staff sadly will give you fix dates as their scripts call them fix dates. The reality is that they are just review dates, nothing more. Keep that in mind.

Combination of:
Over selling
Under investing
Massively changed internet usage habits (streaming) which need much more bandwidth.

Hey Shaf,

Thanks for that, I did ask what would happen if it wasn't fixed by March, and they said they would review again.

But Victoria (agent) seemed optimistic it would be fixed well before March....

but like you say - will believe it when I see it!

Hi Bestie,

How is your broadband now ?

Today it's Sunday 1pm ; usually broadband is slow/unusuable but today I'm getting 100+Mb/s on wifi - so I'm a happy chappy today.

It's a bit cold outside - so gaming and streaming seem to be order of the day !
