Slow broadband 200 MB Package

Slow broadband

Has anyone got any tips on how to speed up Virgin broadband?  I have a 200MB package, however even with a direct connection to the Router I struggle to get more than 50 MB download speed.

I've tried rebooting my PC and also the Virgin box, however no improvement.

Any ideas?

Re: Slow broadband 200 MB Package

Is the direct connection with a PC/Mac that has a gigabit Ethernet port and is the Ethernet cable cat 5e or higher?

How are you testing the speed, are you using http://www.speedtest.net/ or just downloading from a web server?

Are you seeing slow speeds all day or only at peak times (typically 4pm-11pm weekdays and weekends)? Some areas are suffering with over utilisation, which results in very slow speeds at peak times but full speed at off peak times.

If you go to http://192.168.100.1/ to get the VM hub GUI. Don't login but instead click on Router Status which is either a button in the top right of the screen or a text link at the bottom of the screen depending on which hub you have. Click on the Downstream, Upstream and Network Log sections and copy & paste the figures from those screens and post them here, don't worry about the formatting or you can post screenshots if that is easier. Be careful to edit out or obscure any reference to your WAN IP in the log to protect your privacy.

The community can have a look for you and see if anything in the figures looks wrong and advise accordingly. Or you can wait for the VM staff to pick up this thread (can take up to a week) and run checks on your line.

Re: Slow broadband 200 MB Package

Speed is generally no more than 50 MB the whole day .. connected with a Laptop with a gigabit Ethernet port using a 5e cable.  Testing using Speed Net .. also tried connecting via WiFi on iPhone 6 and still never more than 50 Mb download

Re: Slow broadband 200 MB Package

Power levels all look OK.  The sync and timeout errors in the log are not normal and hopefully the forum team can shine some light on the reason for those errors when they get to this thread in a few days.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Re: Slow broadband 200 MB Package

Hiya RunnerBubbsy,

Thanks for posting and a warm welcome to the community.

My apologies that you are not achieving the up to 200 Mbps broadband speeds.

I've taken a look at your connection, the line and hub have come back as fine. The network segment is running stable and healthy which is good.

With the MDD time-outs that Scott mentioned, there was an SNR fault in your area at the time you posted which could of caused these. Has there been anymore since?

Have you tried a speed test whilst the Hub 3 is in modem mode at all? If so were the results any different?

Let us know how you get on

Sam
