Much slower downstream broadband in the evening (TN4)

Hi there,

I've seen some posts that suggest slower broadband in the evening can be location specific.  I can get 150 down (which is what I'm paying for) up until late afternoon and then it drops down until it runs around 8 down in the evening.

I've been logging this against speedtest cli for a couple of months (sampling every 4 hours and then every hour during the problem period), and the averages are consistently low.

The table below shows a summary of what I've collated.  The first column is the hour of the day. I've highlighted the download speeds in the evening

I guess my problem is that although in the past those weren't slow speeds in days gone by, they're now not great if you're paying for 150 and if the evening is the time that you and your family are wanting to watch on demand or download game patches.  The slowest average is 20 times less than what I'm expecting.

Is there a wider problem in the area, cos that looks like contention.  I can get the speeds that I pay for just not at the only time that I'd be expecting to need them.

Would appreciate any advice around this,

Thanks,

Ali

Re: Much slower downstream broadband in the evening (TN4)

Hey there Ali,

Thanks for getting in touch, welcome to the forum Smiley Happy

Sorry to hear about the slow speeds you're experiencing. I'd like to ask a few questions to help us diagnose the fault. Are you mainly testing your speeds on the wireless or hard-wired connection? Also, if possible are you able to test with your Hub in Modem Mode?

Please get back to us so we can continue to investigate.

Take care.

Re: Much slower downstream broadband in the evening (TN4)

Hi Heather,

Thanks for your reply.  I'm testing only on a hard-wired connection over a Gigabit LAN.   I've automated the testing using speedtest cli on a single machine on my network, however when I run the tests ad-hoc on other hard-wired computers on the network I get the same results.

In terms of running in Modem Mode, will my router config be saved for the switch back to Router Mode?

Thanks again,

Ali

Re: Much slower downstream broadband in the evening (TN4)

Hey Ali,

Thanks for the additional info Smiley Happy

I appreciate your efforts so far in terms of diagnosing this fault. If you switch to Modem Mode all of your router settings will remain the same when you revert back assuming you don't pin hole reset your Hub.

Look forward to hearing back from you,

Take care.

Re: Much slower downstream broadband in the evening (TN4)

Hi Heather,

I've switched to modem mode and there is no difference in speed.  I was getting 8-9 down in router mode, then 9-10 down in modem mode and then 8-10 down in router mode again. this was around 9pm.

Is there anything else that can be down as this week I've had speeds of 5 and 6 down repeatedly at this time.

Thanks,

Alergy

Re: Much slower downstream broadband in the evening (TN4)

Hello Ali,

Thanks for another quick reply Smiley Happy

Since we last spoke, an SNR fault has been raised in your area, this might cause sloe and intermittent connections. The ref is: F005224437 and we're hoping to have this resolved on the 18 APR 2017 at around 11:55 AM. Would you please update me after this fault has been resolved.

Thanks for your patience, it's much appreciated.

Take care.

Re: Much slower downstream broadband in the evening (TN4)

Thanks Heather - I appreciate your response.

Out of interest do you think it's likely that an issue opened recently be related to something that I've been seeing for months?  I'm hoping it would but what I've been experiencing doesn't feel like an issue that's only just cropped up.

Thanks again,

Ali

Re: Much slower downstream broadband in the evening (TN4)

Hey Ali,

It's difficult to say for sure. It's possible the SNR has been fluctuating for a little while and there might have been an incident that affected several customers that then raised the alarm. I'm sorry I can't be any more informative.

Catch up with you in a few days.

Take care.

Re: Much slower downstream broadband in the evening (TN4)

Hi Heather,

Did the work go in as planned?  There was an area wide outage on the 19th, so I've only got stats from last night, but they're just the same as before.  Download of 6Mbps at 7pm, 5Mbps at 8pm and 6.5Mbps at 9pm

I'll keep taking readings and see if it improves, but I'm not hopeful.

A

Re: Much slower downstream broadband in the evening (TN4)

Hey Ali,

Good to hear from you, hope you're well Smiley Happy

I can see the SNR issue that was in your area has since been resolved, so I'm hoping this has helped reduce some of the intermittent issues you were experiencing. As for the slow speeds, I can see the peak time traffic increases and we're investigating this at the moment. I'll get back to you soon with more info.

Thanks for your patience,

Take care.
