FTP / Port Forwarding on a Hub 3.0

Hi all,

I'm trying to FTP on a LAN with a Hub 3.0.

I've been going around in so many circles that I have read that port forwarding only works with that modem software if the firewall is switched ON but another thread suggests that HH3 doesn't allow for port forwarding at all?

Can anyone confirm that the Hub 3.0 allows for port forwarding?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: FTP / Port Forwarding on a Hub 3.0

Hi billybob69,

Thanks for getting in touch, I am sorry to see you have had trouble with Port forwarding.

Take a look at Setting Up Port Forwarding and Port Triggering on your Virgin Media Hub It should answer the questions you are asking if however you have already been looking at this help article but you are not having any luck let us know which part you are getting stuck at and we will take a further look.

All the best.

Emma

Re: FTP / Port Forwarding on a Hub 3.0

Did that link answer my questions? No

My questions were pretty simple -

In order to FTP / port forward should the firewall be switched ON (some threads says yes, others say no)?

Does the HH3 allow for port forwarding at all (there are threads that suggest that HH3 doesn't allow it at all)?

if your really wanting stuff to work use modem mode and your own router.

I think that you are about right! All I'm trying to do is FTP internally. When I did this on ASDL with my own router I was up and running within minutes. VM seem to want to complicate things! Would you care to recommend a good router that will do the job?

Depends on your budget and how simple or advanced you want to go.

For something simple here a short list.

ZyXEL NBG6616 AC1200

TP-LINK Archer C8 AC1750

Linksys EA6350

TP-Link AC750

ASUS RT-AC1200G

Edimax BR-6478AC AC1200

D-Link Wireless AC1200

Belkin AC1800

NETGEAR R6250-100UKS AC1600

or advanced ZyXEL USG 40/ZyWall 110 or Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite

Re: FTP / Port Forwarding on a Hub 3.0

Can I just check that VM don't block port 21 server side?

I've put my hub into modem mode and cable connected it to another router (TP-Link AC750). Got internet access again. Gone into the TP-Link settings and allowed it to port forward on 21, disabled my firewall, but when I do a test to see if port 21 is open, it is telling me that it is still closed. :-(

Short answer - no Virgin Media do not block port 21 inbound.

Its not going to be open unless you run a FTP server and allow on the firewall for that device if the device has a firewall.

if on windows run

netstat -a

Re: FTP / Port Forwarding on a Hub 3.0

Thanks for the replies.

I'm trying to FTP some video files to the HDD of a Dreambox (a satellite receiver / tv box). I'm pretty sure that it doesn't have a firewall built in. When I have FTP'ed the same box when I was on ASDL I used Core FTP (not Core FTP Server). Should I be using the FTP Server version?

I've run netstat -a and it has shown that it has established a connection with ports (TCP 192.168.1.101:41960 for example), but I guessing that the connection that I need is TCP 192.168.1.101:21 ?
