I have reduced my package from March taking off sky sports. I have had a bill for £128 which includes sky sports. I thought you paid in advance and that's why you have a double bill when you start out with Virgin media. If this is so how come I am paying in arrears?

Even though you are billed in advance for your service and premium channels, there is a 30 day notice period. During this time, your billing will continue as normal.
If you give notice 1st March then the channels will be disconnected the 31st March. If your billed on the 15th of the month, you'll get charged a full month. Once the channels are off the account the next bill gives you a refund for the time you were billed but didn't have the charges.
