Landline Phone has stopped receiving incoming calls.

There seems to be a problem with our landline telephone. We are able to make outgoing calls perfectly fine, but we can no longer receive incoming phone calls. The call comes into the phone but only rings once or twice before cutting out and we cannot answer the call, and this now happens every time. This started a couple of weeks ago. Advice and help would be appreciated. Thanks.
