If I haven’t changed channels for a prolonged time, I get the message on the TV asking me to press OK to continue, but with the new control sent to me by Virgin last week, this button doesn’t work. I’m having to switch off the TV and then switch it back on again to keep watching.

If you press the Home button and then the OK button does the highlighted option move down the page, if it doesn't then you might just have a faulty remote.
You could try rebooting the box by switching the power off and on again, if that doesn't work try repairing the remote by pressing and hold the TV and 0 buttons for 10 seconds.
If everything else doesn't work I usually find factory resetting the box using the keep recordings option cures the problem.

I am so sorry to hear that you have faced an issue with your remote and a big thank you to roy247 for their advise. Have you been able to try this fix yet?
