Hi, I've recently joined Virgin Media and I am waiting for a new hub, but I was wondering if it's possible to get the existing hub from my previous housemate to work with the new account in the meantime.

No, it's not possible. VM will be expecting the return of your housemates Hub in due course. All VM kit is rented and remains the property of VM. They will levy a charge for the non return of this Hub btw.

Well, that's a new one on me. Looks like the CS in VM sometimes bend the rules, but hey, what do I know 🙂
