Contract renewal crazy price

My contract is ending and I'm being offered a "discount" to renew which would cost me £50 a month more than a new customer, and still £20 more than I am paying now. 

Has anyone been able to get a better deal?

Get prices for all competitors in your area and phone Retentions. Be prepared to leave VM if necessary. You may or may not get a better offer. Note after 90 days you are a new customer again. You may be able to use a 30 day rolling SIM contract to cover those days.
