Our landline was switched over to VOIP sometime ago, generally it’s been okay. However when there is a power failure as happened recently, the phone fails as well. I was glad we had mobiles. With the old system the telephones stayed on!

Has VM sorted this out yet?

Thanks for posting in regards to the recent changes to how your landline works. As the Hub requires power to operate, if there are any power cuts it would impact the ability to use the landline.

If there is a specific need for a landline at all times, we do offer an eBul which would work via a SIM (much like your mobile) and allow contact and to be contacted during power cuts.

Even when he has a mobile and she has a mobile, Telegraph readers panic about using a landline the moment the AC power goes off !   Please learn how to use your mobiles.

Operating as a landlord, almost all of our senior residents still have analogue BT exchange lines and they have almost to a one broken the telephone line is always on model by having just a cordless phone.

The cordless base units stop working during a power cut - and NO that is not the telco's problem.
Phone lines are not sold as a bomb proof 24/7 service.

Openreach is trialling SOTAP for Analogue now, which is a phone service over traditional twisted pair that does not require broadband to function and so keeps analogue services working. However, it seems as if VM does not need something like this and unless told otherwise I'm expecting VM's migration to VoIP to be completed by December 2025.

Lets hope this does not become a very handy get out for Openreach to continue not providing fibre in all the 2000+ line rural exchange areas like ours that still lack any kind of BT FTTC / FTTP service.

To be fair, Openreach was forced into this as OFCOM is concerned about what would happen to vulnerable customers when their VoIP goes down and their Telecare can't work.
