How do you move from Virgin Media to another provider?

    Call them. Ask for the end date of your contract. If it has expired already you just need to give VM 30 days notice to cancel the service.

     

    DO NOT leave this task in the hands of an agent provider.

    They will tell you they will handle things with VM just so they can close the sale and then you will be left with two services and two bills.

Whether or not you want to port your landline number to Vodafone is a key decision which will influence how to proceed.

The usual advice on here is to try to overlap your two services if it is feasible/affordable for you to do that for a short time.

No provider is immune from potential problems with a new installation. If your Vodafone installation gets delayed for any reason, and your VM installation is pending disconnection, you can end up in a situation with no services. Overlapping also gives you a chance to check the new Vodafone connection works as advertised and you are happy with the new service during your 14 day cooling off period. If Vodafone does not live up to expectation you can fall back on the VM connection.

I know this is an old post, but i tried to do a 2 week overlap, But these new ofcom rules just implemented in August have prevented it. As soon as I ordered with Vodaphone, Virgin Media has changed my disconnection date to be the day before I join Vodaphone. Yet I intentionally created an overlap. Physically Vodaphone on Openreach network, and Virgin on their own, means it should of been fine, since i need a new install by an engineer for Vodaphone. Installs can go wrong, hence the need for an overlap to avoid downtime.

Virgin media emailed me a new disconnection date, but its not currently showing on the customer support screen, so they can't change anything.

    I was hoping One Touch Switching was only a Openreach thing.  I intentionally have both a VM and Openreach connection to be a backup. I can for see this being a huge PITA when I try to move the Openreach connection from BT to EE next year while keeping the VM line.

      That will be one of the intitial teething trouble of OTS

      Anybody that wants to run a new service in parallel with the old one as they want/need an overlap, ie jonwillis  moving from VM to Vodafone shouldn't use the new switch process. 

      In cases like this when placing an order with a new ISP they need to say it's a new service, and not a migration. They then need to place a cancellation request with the old provider (in VM's case giving 30 days notice)

      Moving from BT to EE should be simple as they are basically the same thing, as BT provide the broadband for EE.   VM have their own infrastructure separate from BT/EE (Openreach)

      For work redundancy, I had both VM and BT running concurrently and this resulted in no downtime at all. I never had both ISP's fail at the same time.

        I agree it should be simple, but it appears according to @jonwillis post that VM are part of the OTS system despite having their own infrastructure.
