We are aware that some customers are experiencing issues with their email service and are very sorry for the inconvenience this is causing. Our teams are working flat out to fully restore all emails as soon as possible.

Reading these numerous posts, it does appear that IMAP users are in real difficulty if they weren't backing up their Emails. I use POP3 and regularly backup my Outlook *.pst files and I can see from some IMAP posters that they too have been backing up their Emails.
So, if VM pulls the plug tomorrow on providing Email services, anyone with a backup can easily move their Email archive to another provider (e.g. Gmail or Outlook).
For me, the real pain will be informing goodness knows how many organisations (banks, societies, other organisations, let alone all my personal contacts) of my new Email address. It will take forever.
I do think VM should have made it more clear that not backing up ones Emails was always going to be risky. The less techy amongst us have unfortunately assumed that their data would always be safe.
Good advice, store in your mail client and back them up.
To give users a glimmer of hope, we have several VM email accounts in our house, vm.com and ntlworld, and in the last couple of days they have all come back. But, historic emails not yet arrived. We have not changed any settings, re-installed or the like, just sat and waited, like watching paint dry. I have moved my own main email account to another provider that begins with Pr, and am about to move my wife's, as we cannot tolerate this constant threat of disruption or loss. This is I believe what VM wants anyway.
I'm pleased to say that since changing back to imap.ntlworld.com, as suggested by VMCopperUser, my email has been behaving itself. Clearly that won't work for everyone, but it certainly did the trick for me.
Thankfully, I haven't lost any important emails as they are all copied to local folders on my hard drive (and backed up). I don't trust service providers to look after my messages and that also applies to paperless billing. Once the folders are set up, it's a simple matter each day to move messages you want to keep.

Plenty of suggestions to access your emails.
Use Webmail and forward them or download the information you need.
When I buy Tickets of any kind I "print to PDF" and save to the cloud and to the device I will travel with - I am not saying it's your fault, just saying it's a good idea in case there's no connectivity or server issues on the day.

presumably those documents and travel details were emailed to you from vendors/organisations you have accounts with (assuming you weren't able to deal with them anonymously as a 'Guest'). As such, reach out to them/log on to those accounts and request they resend them (to an alternative email account if possible). Most organisations I deal with recognise that issues happen from time-to-time and should readily accommodate your request. Good luck & I hope you manage to retrieve all you need...
Then, as VMCopperUser suggests, Print to PDF and save to the various devices* that you'll have at your disposal, as well as online accounts (I use Google Drive & One Drive). Devices crash, break, run out of battery or, worst case, are lost/misplaced/stolen; networks become unavailable, application servers go down, all at the most inopportune moments, so it's always best to build in some redundancy suitable to your level of acceptable risk and the value/importance of the data in question. In many cases this will mean actually printing off hard copies too (overseas travel for example).
*I save to SD Cards on our mobiles/eReaders because I can take them out and insert them in another device, if a device loses battery charge or breaks...
Seems like everything is broken or breaking...when are we going to get emails back and old folders back? Missing since the 19th June, now 2nd July and counting.
Virgin Media should just admit they are ****. How are they demanding all these price rises and offer such a rubbish service. Really poor. I'm pleased I swayed my bro into cancelling why he was in the 14day cooling off period.
I will be next once a better service is in my area, **** show from VM.
I can put up with the rare issue but VM seem like they are just regulars at offering sub standard service to their customers.
A lot of companies (in the UK) no longer offer Email to new customers (Even Virgin Media have stopped). They stopped usenet a couple of years ago too, so it just looks like they are going to be nothing more than a transit provider. That's okay - but it really kicks the users who want it all in one place and have had it for yonks. I think it's okay to cut cost, but cutting cost (services), staff, providing sub-par equipment, and still pushing out a 17% price hike just seems wrong to me. In my area (Until sometime in 2024 - BRING ON THE FTTP/H BT) there really isn't a choice if you want a fast broadband service.
Since you carried out "essential work" to mail email service on 29th June, email will not synchronize from my Android client to the server.
The email client periodically displays "Cannot synchronize" messages and emails deleted on the client are received again.
We can send and receive emails, although emails coming in arrive erratically and often some time after being sent.
We have made no configuration changes.
Same here, after 21yrs I'll be switching to FTTP BT, not around me until 2026 unfortunately. Don't want the hassle of switching but if this is the way VM runs an email service it's not a good look for the broadband service.
I have emails I need for court evidence, theatre tickets and vouchers for events that I can't seem to get re-sent. I knew VM was rubbish but not being able to restore "backed up" emails suggests they're not telling the full story. How about some honesty? If they're not back by Friday I'll be complaining to the ICO (it's a breach of GDPR as personal data isn't AVAILABLE - one of the requirements under GDPR) and considering legal action under GDPR.

You will get a complete answer before midnight from the Director of Customer Service Axel Wehrle because that is what he promised and Axel is a target focused leader with 20 years of Customer Service experience, putting customers needs at the centre. He would not dream of deceiving you and neither would he do that to me. Just let him crack on with the job and report back to us later today.

Time to start bombarding the ICO with complaints I think! It's all very well saying people expect their data (email) to be available and that's unreasonable but while I accept there are sometimes "issues" with availability, most of us would accept 24 hours, maybe even 48, but availability of personal data IS A LEGAL OBLIGATION under GDPR and for it to be mysteriously somehow "safe" but not available after this many weeks is far from lawful or reasonable, by any standards. The mysterious vanishing emails just happened to coincide with me issuing a court claim (not having had time to go through and save/print what I needed) and my birthday where I received some very generous experience gifts by email. If I don't get these replaced by the companies they were purchased from and can't access the original emails you can be sure I'll be going after vm for compensation!
Email was back up and running, now it is offline again, I am in the CM2 area is there any news as to when our email service will be back up and running, many thanks.
