Wireless Security Settings greyed out on Hub - unable to disable SSID broadcast

This has been posted before, twice. Back in 2022. Virgin said it was a fault being fixed. It is now 2025.

All my settings in Advanced Settings - Wireless - Security, are greyed out, for both 2 and 5g. I cannot disable the SSID broadcast.

Tried speaking with Virgin Customer support and they try and go through standard wifi issue support. It's not a wifi issue it is a hub settings issue!! My wifi is fine. Can someone from Virgin with TECH KNOWLEDGE please help me.

Try a pin-hole reset of the hub and do not use the VM Connect app.

Thank you but this did not work. Never used Virgin Connect App

  • I'm going to have to raise a formal complaint about this. I have been on live chat for over 2hrs, virgin still can't help me. I've randomly received an SMS saying an engineer is booked for tomorrow.... I did not organise this. Live chat aren't responding. When I click on link it says I DONT have an engineer booked for tomorrow. The SMS said I will be charged £25 if I'm not in, lol..... Raising a formal complaint now in anticipation for this!!!

VM don't seem to care to fix it due to pods needing to see SSID and even if you don't have pods well VM...you get the idea...

so your left with rolling your own router with 1Gb ports to do this and put hub in modem mode

    Hi Naomihi

Any particular reason you are wanting to disable the SSID broadcast?

Go to Advanced Settings - Wireless - Wireless Signal and click on Disable Channel Optimization then click on Apply Changes.

Then open Advanced Settings - Wireless - Security and you should be able to disable the 2.4Ghz SSID broadcast.

The 5Ghz band may still be greyed out, if so amend the SSID name by adding a letter or numerical digit eg from VM12345678 to VM123456789. You should then also be able to disable the 5Ghz SSID broadcast, and scroll down and click on Apply Changes.

  • This has obviously been an issue for some time.  I came across it today when trying to diagnose an issue I had with my wireless.  I was able to enter the Hub5 admin pages (192.168.0.1) and saw that the options were greyed out.  It then dawned on me that if I made changes, I was risking disconnection of my device.  So I connected using an internet cable using another device - my android tablet does not have an ethernet connection - and sure enough, the settings to change the advanced wireless settings became available.  From years ago - I'm getting old now - I realised that the best way to administer an internet hub / router is directly using an internet cable.  Perhaps this post will save others the angst and frustration I experienced. You might have to borrow an ethernet-capable device - PC/Laptop/tablet owned by a family member or trusted friend to effect the changes, if you don't own one yourself.
