Un paid bill after contracted ended.

This is a bit of a long description but here goes. Around 15 years me and my flat m8 got virgin media broadband in the flat m8s name. After only a year he moved out but granted me permission to keep the broadband as long as I pay it. I have paid it for 15 years until early this year I moved abroad and my contract expired the same month I emigrated. I contacted virgin media beforehand to say I wouldn't renew. A few weeks ago the same flat m8 contact me to say he had received debt letters due to un paid broadband bills and it was affecting his mortgage abilities. How can this be if i informed that I wouldn't renew before the contract ended.

    Contracts continue indefinitely until you formally cancel them.

    AFAIK it is only the account holder who can make changes to the account (outside of limited circumstances such as bereavement, POA etc.)

    I would suggest that if you were not the account holder, you could not cancel the account as VM had no contractual relationship with you.

    The contract with VM never ends, until the account holder gives VM 30 days' notice to cancel. What you are describing sounds like the minimum term period had reached its end.

    Interesting to know though how you managed to renew with VM over a 15 year period if you were not the account holder.

      At the time it was mutually beneficial for it to be in his name but I paid the bill. Once me moved out. He transfered the account to my email. And since then I just paid it on time for 14+ years. No issues. Phone calls just consisted of being called "mr friends surname" and I never corrected.

        Well, that would be the reason your friend is being contacted as he is legally responsible for whatever VM claims it is owed. He was the only person who could cancel the services.
