ntlworld.com - ending!

Dear VM Team,

I currently have a number of ntlworld.com addresses and wanted to find out if these will be ceased soon or if I can continue to keep using them?

I've been hearing that there may be changes, however nothing yet confirmed.

I'm also spending a lot of time overseas working on various Programs so its important that I have access to email on a regular and uninterrupted basis.

If you could please advise,

Regards,

John

  • Hi johnxf thanks for your reply.

Yes this is right, as long as the email addresses are linked with the account paying for these services they should definitely not be closed down at this stage.

We do hope this helps and if you need any further assistance, please let us know.

Can you elaborate regarding the storing/downloading emails, are you looking to transfer them to another service for example?

I had always understood the requirement was to have VM broadband to be able to continue using VM email but the VM blog link mentions 'core products' and TV and landline is now mentioned below

Perhaps as long as you are paying .....

I'd still move the mailboxes in any case.

If you are still a paying VM customer, you should still have access to your mailboxes.  If you are note, as above, VM are purging mailboxes of users who have left and no longer paying VM.  Either way, I would suggest you move your mailboxes to a non ISP based solution.  Even if you are a paying customer with, say three ntl mailboxes, you will now need to setup 3 separate 3rd party email addresses to access these ntl mailboxes.

Thank you for the response, how do i know when the account will close and also how to forward/ divert email from my old account to a new one?  There is also the question of migrating what I have historically and storing for future reference.  I do have a Gmail account but its full so looks like I may need to purchase some extra space in order to compensate.

Also, although I don't have broadband, I do have my landline phone with Virgin and that can be used I believe to justify the email being used?  However, worth checking...

Mailboxes are supposed to be purged after 90 days of a contract ending with VM.  However, some mailboxes (mine included) were not, so VM are now proceeding with a clean up.  You can setup a forwarder in the mailbox to forward any incoming emails to your Gmail.  However, as for the older mail, you will need to export this using something like Mailstore Home.

The bigger point, and we are all guilty at times, is using a mail messaging system as storage.  Mail should be archived both at home and possibly offsite as well.  If the mailbox goes kaput, as least you have archived copies so no harm done.

Thank you jpeg and adduxi for your advice.

It would also be good to hear from someone at Virgin about this issue as I am paying an amount per month and would like to know 1) when this service will stop, and 2) a bit more about any recommended options that could be of help.  Many thanks in advance.

Hi johnxf, thank you for your posts.

In order to have active e-mail addresses, you'd require an active home services account.

We don't have any plans to remove access for active customers at this time.

        Regards,
        Daniel

To be clear, the people representing Virginmedia on social media (including this forum) can only say what is VM's policy on the day they speak. They know nothing more of VM's future plans than you or I.

When VM decide to close the email service, they and we will be told.

  • I'd highly recommend not using it for anything important. my first-ever @ntlworld email is still active.

If the requirement to be able to use VM email is to be paying for a current VM broadband service (as has been the case in the past AFAIK) one wonders why the help pages, on the subject of email closures, muddy the waters by even mentioning terms such as 'core products' here

    https://community.virginmedia.com/blog/Digital-life/some-important-information-if-you-have-a-virgin-media-email-account/5607207

and 'TV, broadband or a landline' here
