Still no 5x Modem Mode?

Sales rep and engineer both seemed to think I would be able to use my existing router with this newly  installed 5x hub.  I cannot. Is it just because my 2.40.13-2210.4 software needs updating?

  • You can force modem mode on the 5x hub. simply put http://192.168.0.1/?page=modemmode into your web browser. I tried it earlier and it worked, however with modem mode on the hub then failed to respond on either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.100.1 or anything else. My router couldn't see it or the internet, although my pc was able to access the internet (with a public 87.x.x.x address). I need the virgin DNS and DHCP server addresses for my router, then I think it would work.

    Knows their stuff

It's cancel time, albeit through complaint and deadlock letter OR SFP route via Google of replace hub 5x.....

It's ridiculous though of VM. They did this before with a hub on hybrid coax and there was a backlash and customers cancelled. Really not acceptable as they don't officially allow people to use their own kit because they refuse to use a "normal" ONT like other FTTP ISPs. To look you into a most basic router at inflated prices is just arrogance. They must be trying to data mine as much as possible about people's use as the basic router can't even use a different DNS provider or set DNS over TLS at a router level for all devices along with DNSSEC. Basically unless you change your client, they are wanting you to use their unencrypted DNS where they can see all URL lookups and not use DNSSec to certify authoritative DNS and not 'man in the middle' spoof.

I think this is part of the VM Websafe setup, so they need you to use their DNS servers.  However that's a different story .......

However I do agree with ending the fibre in a "proper" ONT type unit, perhaps even with an SFP+ port?

  • Bottom line is they've mis-sold this service to SO many people. They altered the page retrospectively to remove the HUB 5X references to modem mode over a month after they began selling it in my area which they had before I made my purchase. (Need to find this on the way back machine tbf so I can use it to cancel) Took me over a month of drop outs, hourly latency spikes they tried to convince me I was imagining and back and forth with people who had no idea what XGS PON or the 5X even was. Eventually started getting passed to the 'team who can help with the 5X' and they were EXACTLY as unequipped to help with my issues at the time.

I was told time and time again by people to avoid Virgin media like the plague but at the time they were the only fibre provider in my area. I cannot wait to leave and never return.

Hi Riche90 thanks for your post here although we're sorry to hear of the concerns you've raised here.

We cannot see any faults on the line at present - you've mentioned dropouts but we're not able to locate them to the extent you've mentioned, everything looks like it's been running perfectly on the line for the last few weeks so is this now resolved for you?

      Many thanks

welcome to VM way of the future where we are rfc 1918 ready for CGNAT because no one want to do IPv6 or a better CGNAT by clone WAN IPs with different MAC's and inbound AI support.
