I also see that some people report they have newer firmware than me, 1.2.1b / 2.40.13-2210.4, but it sounds like it's some phased roll out.I also found some threads talking about a device that can be used but found that very high temperatures are reported and cooling may be required, so I'm not tempted by the option.So, before I cancel, dig out my Vigor 130 and go back to BT, is there anything that can be done?Thanks in advance.Greg

We should be very grateful to greganew for posting in such detail.There have been a number of claims that what has been attempted here works,but no threads that have confirmed in quite so much detail the challenges and pitfalls and brick walls.

I cancelled during cooling off and am now back on my very slow ADSL, but at least I know it will be reliable!I wanted to thank all those who commented, offered help or just got their point across about the lack of support for Modem Mode.My conclusion is that on my version of firmware, using the Modem Mode hidden URL, with my Asus RT-AX86U WAN port configured for DHCP with Continuous Mode, it was not reliable, most likely a DHCP renewal issue.If I was to try again then I would try the suggestion from @legacy1 to set the MAC address of the Asus WAN port, see page 2.In the meantime please all keep your fingers crossed that Fibre Heroes dig me in some fibre, it's only 30 meters!It's worth me saying that if you are cancelling during your cooling off period you may get cut off early! I was supposed to be cut off on the 4th but they did it in the early hours of the 1st, which wasn't ideal as I had a house full of friends and with a stinking hangover had to dig out the ADSL modem and get it all working again.With a proper Modem Mode I'd sign back up in a flash!Good luck to you all.Cheers,Greg

If you've a router or switch you can plug an SFP+ module into you can replace the Hub5x entirely. No need to worry about modem mode.The lack of modem mode is due to VM both wanting to force you to use their hub and wanting to manage it over a protocol that needs it to have an IP address: a Hub5x in a proper modem mode wouldn't have an IP address. If they didn't force you to use their hub they couldn't ruin your service periodically by running speed tests on it.

The Hub5x does not offer modem mode ATM - and little prospect of it happening in the near future (just search this forum).
Best option is to use it in router mode and stick the Asus into Access Point mode so you can use its wifi functionality

  Hey @Legacy1, it was 100% working:-) My Asus RT-AX86U internet interface was configured for DHCP and was showing a public IP, 86.x.x.x from the Hub 5x. After the power down #BlameTheWife, it never worked again and despite many tries the Asus never got a DHCP address from the Hub 5x.
  To me it looks like the Hub 5x does not reliably provide a DHCP address to my Asus RT-AX86U.

    Maybe when you first tried it was on an older firmware and it later updated after the power cycle when you moved the kit? Who knows. However it’s not supported or even meant to be visible, so I guess there is no point in trying.
    The other method seems to work (?) but it’s very expensive and could be shut down by VM at some point, so again not worth it.

May it did work then VM stopped it from working?
look on the hub for the MAC change the last bit to the hex from what it is and try with a PC with that MAC

I've gone through the process in the Reddit post again and I am in Modem Mode
My Asus RT-AX86U has an IP from the Hub 5x
It's set to DHCP
With Continuous Mode
Everything looks great:-)
Ultimately I need this to be stable as glitchy internet will create undesirable friction with the wife and kids!
I'll leave it all powered on for a couple of days, see how stable it is, then in a few days I'll reboot it all and see what happens. I'll report back with the results.
Any idea how long the Public IP DHCP lease is? That going through a renewal should be a positive sign.
I'm off to enjoy some fast downloads and maybe a beer!

Well it be 7 days for a renewal but likely and VM do do this give you a 1 hour lease which then goes to 7 days
So are you using the 10Gb port or 1Gb?

  lol! I'm using port 1 (the top port) to the Asus and port 4 (the 10GB port) to manage the Hub 5x. I'll faff around with routing to manage the Hub 5x another day!
  I've had 10 years of very stable 32 Megabits per second ADSL from BT. I have everything crossed that this unsupported configuration plays ball!

all VM had to do was say modem mode is not supported on the 10Gb port and people will happily use 1Gb for modem mode to show VM that they should make thier next model hub with 10Gb port support modem mode.

So, my Hub 5x was configured for Modem Mode using the steps in this Reddit post, https://www.reddit.com/r/VirginMedia/comments/1ah1boq/hub_5x_working_modem_mode/.
My connection was 100% stable for just over 7 days then suddenly stopped working. The green light was still on the Hub 5x and my Asus was still reporting a WAN IP of 86.1.253.x but no traffic was flowing.
I faffed around for a while, disabling the WAN port on the Asus, rebooting the Asus, but no traffic flow. I rebooted the Hub 5x and my Asus but never got a public IP via DHCP on the Asus WAN port, nor could any other device that I plugged in.
I'm pretty confident that this is a Virgin Media DHCP / firmware issue, that they could easily resolve. Someone in the thread said that the DHCP lease can sometimes be 7 days.
I put the Hub 5x back into Modem Mode and was immediately back in business and have been for several days. I can't go on like this though as an 18 month contract would see me re-doing the Modem Mode configuration 76 more times!
I've cancelled and am going back to my very slow ADSL!
If only Virgin Media would give customers a choice. The majority will be very happy with a Hub 5x but for those that want to use their own hardware just give us a simple modem.
It was nice while it lasted.

  Hey carl_pearce, thanks for the suggestion 🙂 Can you expand on that a little please? Simply change the Asus WAN MAC to any old random MAC? Are you in a similar position to me?
  When the traffic stopped flowing I tried plugging a laptop into port 1, the port that goes to my Asus WAN port, but that couldn't get an IP either, so I assume this is a DHCP server issue on the Virgin Media side, basically refusing the hand out an IP, possibly firmware related.
  My service goes off on the 4th November so I am happy to try just about anything.

    It's the WAN MAC that usually determines the IP address allocation, so maybe changing the MAC could help, although as you say if your laptop didn't work then nothing would I suppose.
    Maybe try setting it to the MAC of the HUB.

When the hub is in modem mode a change of MAC means you need to power off the hub for 2 minutes also a random MAC some 2 HEX down from what is listed on the hub can help like
"00:00::00:00:00:FF"
to
"00:00::00:00:00:FD"

@legacy1, thanks for the suggestion on configuring the Asus WAN MAC. At the moment I think I can guarantee that a reboot of the Hub 5x and the Asus, or DHCP renewal on the Asus WAN port, will result in me no longer getting an IP. Is this MAC change likely to completely solve that?
Is there any chance of the Hub 5x, in hidden Modem Mode config, working in a very stable way? Sometimes I travel with work so the wife needs to be able to get it working if I'm not here!
Any hints or tips to get this Hub 5x working stably in hidden Modem Mode config are greatly appreciated. I will try all options up until the 4th November, which is when my service goes offline due to me cancelling it!
