Dual Wan in Modem mode

Hey guys, quick question, I'm currently with BT/EE and thinking of getting a Virgin package in as a failover line. Just wondering do I put the modem in modem mode while doing this or just keep it in router mode. I have an Asus router which supports failover and Dual Wan and can configure say Ethernet 4 for failover or load balancing.

Cheers

  • Yes, I did this for a while until my VM contract expired. You need to have the VM router in modem mode to avoid dual NAT.

You need to check that VM won't be giving you a full fibre connection with a Hub 5x Hub, because that can't be set to modem mode.

Yes, I had a DualWAN setup for work redundancy with VM and BT.  Hub in modem mode as noted by jpeg1    Worked very well, both circuits running concurrently as load balanced.

Good point about the Hub 5X - one to watch out for !

  • Not sure what Hub will arrive, it's for a 362mb connection. Hopefully they don't send me one of their 5x hubs.

Keep us up to date on which Hub you get.  You will only get a Hub 5X if you are in the newer XGS-PON area serviced by Nexfibre/VM.  The older VM areas are all co-ax cables, so Hub 3, 4 or 5.

Well VM are going to be a ass about the hub 5x so just connect as you would in modem mode just don't use any other ports or wifi on the hub. But I would think the hub 5x is a security concern about its wifi which you should disable change password but then VM may re-enable it or even reset your hub without you knowing so thats not safe is it VM...
