Possible Hub 5 issue

Hi,  I changed to VM about a month ago with a Gig1 Full Fibre Broadband package with a Hub 5.  All seemed fine initially.  I did the speed tests and 2 places in the house were low so I requested 2 extenders having been told I could have up to 3.  I have heard nothing about these.

I tried to connect a VOIP phone to the hub and it would not see it.  I tried the phone on 2 other networks and it worked fine.  I have bought a wireless VOIP phone and that connects but occasionally reports a low signal even though it is only 5 meters away.

I use Speedtest by Ookla on my phone with I have used in 100's of places, homes, pubs, hotels etc.  The new home hub is the only one which starts in yellow instead of blue and states "Your internet connection may be unstable". I completes the test and can go up to 800 but sometimes as low as 100.  Also the ping symbol stays yellow and can be as high as 24.

Have I got a faulty Hub?

Actually it will measure the speed to the Hub & Device, if the device is connected by cable to the hub. NB I use a 16 port managed switch connected to the 2.5gbit port on the hub, to negate the firmware turning on Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE). This has been an ongoing problem for over a year, waiting for updated Hub firmware.

Hey big-luap, we've just replied to you on another thread.

Check it out when you can :)

  • I would advise checking your cable connections to make sure you have a good connection. The center core put a 10° bend in it, so it touches the side when clamped. If the speed does not increase to 960 via cable to a 1 gig port, then you may need the externals checking. There could be a fault with the connection at the underground juction box or the green box. Have seen several faults over the last 18 years, resulting in a Road rewire a few years ago. Having put Cat 5e cable round my property about 15 years ago. I have a WiFi 6 Router setup as a WiFi access point at the furthest point from my Hub, It is by an upsatirs window, so provides WiFi to my back garden. Was advised how to do this by a network geek, at the time of installing the cables. This operates separately  to the Virgin Hub, ie different network name. So if the Hub is changed this remains the same.
