Poor Wifi Upstairs - Options?

Recently switched to Virgin Media on their M350 Fibre Broadband package.  While the speeds are incredible compared to my previous BB with Sky, the wifi coverage throughout the house is really bad. As soon as I leave the room the router is in, the signal gets really poor and I end up on mobile data.

I installed a TP-Link Powerline adapter in the back bedroom, but this has caused it's own issues as when you are in-between both signals, the connection drops, despite showing that it is still connected to the wifi.

I don't want to pay £8 a month (£96 a year!) for a wifi booster as I'm not confident it will help.

Would anyone recommend doing away with the Virgin Media provided router and purchasing a new one instead? If anyone has any recommendations that they know will work that would be great.

Other than that, perhaps a mesh setup that someone can recommend perhaps?

I always chase the best prices and so the chances are that when my contract ends I will switch back to Sky, or similar, so ideally I would like a future proof solution that can come with my to my new provider if I get one.

The Deco M50 Mesh is mentioned here quite often, so that may be worth a look.  Just make sure any system has Gigabit ports as some of the cheaper ones are only 10/100

No problem at all bob2sea, glad that the team could get an appointment booked in for you. If you get the chance please let us know how the visit goes 👍

      Kind Regards,

  • You will still need to use the rubbishy hub but certainly stick it in modem mode and use your own router. I swear by Asus and personally use the RT-AC86U (although newer models have since come out). It comfortable throws the WiFi all around my detatched house (at full speed too) . I suggest looking for "AX" models these days too.

  • Hello bob2sea,

Welcome back to the Community and thanks for taking the time to post. I’m sorry to hear of the issues that you’re having with your WiFi connection at the moment. I have looked into your connection and can see that there are problems with both up and down stream channels that would be causing the issues that you're experiencing. We would need to send out an engineer to resolve the issues. I can arrange the appointment from here but would need to confirm a few details via a private message, that I will drop over in a moment. Please look out for the private message and we can get started.
    Kind Regards,

If the visit doesn't fix your WiFi problem, don't be persuaded to rent a VM pod for £8 a month. You can buy your own better device to keep, for less than the cost of a year's rental.
