Issue with my works laptop/VPN

Hi, I have a hub 5 and get speeds of 350mbps using my phone, but when I’m using my works laptop it keeps crashing.

My IT department have advised that VM are not letting my connection pass-through.

Anyone having similar issues, my works VPN is AO, a Microsoft product. Thanks.

  • You have already told us the mobile reached 380Mbps over Wi-Fi so the VM Hub on M350 is working perfectly.

If you have a problem with the work laptop that has an always on VPN take it up with your employer, it is really not a community forum matter.

With VPN disabled, check the VM Service Speed:

    https://www.samknows.com/realspeed/

Once the test begins click on: Run full test
to include: Latency, Jitter, Packet loss & Upload speed

The speed at the Hub should reflect your subscription.

The same “Samknows Realspeed” tests are available as very handy
apps for iPhone/iPad and Android mobile / tablets.

Hi, unfortunately I can’t disable the VPN as this is my work’s laptop. I tried to disconnect but it just keeps trying to connect.

I ran the test anyway and got speeds of 150mbps, less than half of my subscription.

    Thanks.

So 150Mb/s over VPN is rate limit imposed by your firm.

The rate was limited to about 35Mb/s when I was with Capgemini, sounds low but still plenty for submitting weekly reports, expenses and time sheets !  Do whatever it takes to be paid !

The rate limits are to stop employees with multi gigabit connections swamping
the VPN platform by running repeated speed tests !

Use your mobile with the app versions of Realspeed to test what the Hub is doing, the speed results for the Hub and the device are independent.

Note the AV600 device can not deliver a connection rate of 150Mb/s, expect the figures to be less than half if you choose to use the AV600 as your link to the VM Hub.

On M350 a speed test of 380Mb/s means the Wi-Fi is working well.

      Hi @ Client62,

The WI-FI is working, but I'm not getting any reliable speeds on my laptop, which is located no more than 3 metres from my Hub, located on the same floor.

I decided to use the new extender I purchased, and I'm getting a reliable speed of 90Mb/s where the laptop is located, so to me, this is an issue with the Hub's signal.

      What are your thoughts?
      Thanks.

Strip out any AV600 or similar. Boot the laptop in Safe mode with networking. Run the SamKnows test in full. Share a screenshot /photo of the result.

Your getting the correct speed with the hardware you have like laptop has 100Mbp port and AV600 has 100Mb port.

  • Have you tried entering a IP address into DHCP and assigning it to laptop ,could be there or dns

The only reason to change a DNS is if your VPN fails to connect using the VM DNS.
That is clearly not the situation here.

  • I am having a similar issue. My Dell work laptop detects the hub but it suddenly goes: ‘no internet, secured’. Occasionally it works. I had no issues and about 10 days ago, it stopped working.

All my other devices can connect. We also have an extension/repeater/booster from VM but it does not change anything. I tried to connect right next to my hub 5 and it did not work either.

My laptop can connect to any other network. I tried sky and my phone tethering and it works fine. Just not VM.

Did various resets on both laptop and router (with the pencil). Also tried to forget the network. Nothing. Updated WIFI servers on laptop too.

Called VM and they said all was working but it might be a more complex issue requiring their other team to check on the settings in laptop. This is not free of charge. But as soon as I told them it was a work laptop and so I am not the administrator, they said they could not do anything. Also had various calls with my IT department and they think maybe VM had some update and it clashes with my settings. They can’t do much either as they would need to be at my house to see what signal and info my laptop is detecting from my hub 5 to see if the laptop is not receiving properly.

I am not experienced enough to know what to change in the hub5 settings. I wish VM had offered to go through the configuration and see what we could try to change safely but all they said was that they could not help more than checking their connection.

I ordered an ethernet cable and adapter. I really hope this will work because we can’t really change provider at the minute sadly.

It’s a catch 22 but I am not impressed by VM customer service. Other people seem to have the same issue with their hubs. They could have suggested some setting options.

Put hub in modem mode if it don't work and get your own router with 1Gb ports.
