Hub 5x not providing IP to router

Hi guys,

appologies if this has been asked before, but I have a hub 5x that I want to use in modem mode with my router but it will not provide my router with an IP address. I have tried everytheing I can think of but nothing seems to work.

  • Hey Enoch_Powell, thank you for reaching out and a warm welcome to the community, we are so sorry to hear about your connection issues.

We can see you've been given some support on here, did this help at all?

Bottom line, there is no (official) modem mode available for the 5x. And that’s the end of the argument.

Yes, I know there have been all sorts of posts detailing ‘hidden URLs’, work arounds etc. Possibly they work for some people based on ‘circumstances’ but it seems to be unreliable at best.

You have to work on the basis that modem mode simply isn't available on the 5x and possibly never will be. So the question becomes ‘how are you going to work around that....’?

No I won’t be feeling sorry, because that is the truth.

Right now, is there a functional modem mode on the 5x? Yes or No?

Maybe there might be tomorrow, or next week, or next year, but right now?

Use of modem mode on a Hub 5x ranges from claims it works to more frequent reports that it is not a reliable and fails within a few days.

Have you set the Hub 5x into modem mode ?

If you can not get modem mode to work consider operating your router in access point mode,
use of double NAT will bring all sorts of time waiting failures / frustrations.

Maybe your on old firmware? modem mode is said to be removed on newer firmware because VM want everyone behind there NAT and trying to make out Ohh no with fibre we must do router when really they just want active Statistics that cause ping drop and spikes.

Its said that modem mode may work on 1Gb ports the top one as 10Gb port may not work the only other way is to search betterinternet SFP+

VM my also want to see your devices with there O so good NAT router but you can just double NAT so they only see one device then you have to port forward or DMZ to it which they don't support and them say we only support upto the hub yet BQM is to the hub and they don't support a stable ping with all there auto speed tests they do.

In short Docsis is better till they add modem mode on the 10Gb port for fibre I mean IP pass through is another way I would be happy about being its only limitation is change your MAC to get a new IPv4 but aside from that just like modem mode with your WAN IP to your router and even VM can do their Statistics.
