Hub 3 problems

I have the Virgin Hub 3 with 2.4ghz and 5ghz.The devices i use are all 5ghz and are all in the same room as the hub,yet the hub seems to prioritize 2.4,and i always have speed problems on that band.

Is it still possible to set the hub to prioritize 5ghz,and if so,can someone give me the info to do it please.

Thank you in advance.

If you are not using the VM Connect app or VM Pods, you can split the SSID into two Wifi names.

    •    Access your Hub by navigating to 192.168.0.1
    •    Login with the default login info (on base of Hub) unless you've already updated it.
    •    Go to Advanced Settings > Wireless > Security
    •    Disable the Smart Optimisation on the wifi bands.
    •    Under Wireless Frequency 2.4GHz change the Wifi Network Name (SSID), suggest append _2 to the end.
    •    Repeat for the Wireless Frequency 5GHz, suggest append _5 to the end and click on Apply changes
    •    Try to avoid spaces and periods in the SSID names as they can cause issues with certain devices.

      Hi

Thanks for the info. After i finish your instructions,am i then able to select just 5ghz.

I only ask as some google results say that stopping 2.4ghz is not possible anymore.

If they are split you can choose which band to connect to.  No need to disable  2.4Ghz

      That's great,thanks for that.

What I don't get at the moment though,is why, when both bandwidths are enabled, the hub chooses to select the extremely congested 2.4ghz channels 1/6/11,when my devices all support 5ghz and are a few feet away from the hub!

I thought that the purpose of 2.4ghz was to kick in if the devices were at a longer range.

Surely Virgin should have made 5ghz the default, until it was out of range, when it could then switch to 2.4ghz.Am i missing something here.Is there any reason why this is not the case?

On the very few occasions when i have checked the bandwidth, and happen to be on 5ghz,the speed can be 50% higher consistently. Are they keeping people on 2.4ghz to keep the speeds down? I can't see any other reason for it when 5ghz is available, and my devices are very close to the hub.

Your device not the Hub chooses which Wi-Fi band to use.

On the 2.4 GHz band is it best practice to use channels 1 or 6 or 11 only, using other channels causes overlap interference.  Below is a graph of the 2.4GHz band using Ch 1,6,11.

As you can see, selecting channel 3 or 8 would not be a wise move.

It is true that the slower more stable 2.4GHz band exceeds the range
of the potentially faster short range 5GHz band.

The VM Hub should be broadcasting on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands all the time,
you might want to try the 5GHz band on channels 36 or 44 these are non DFS channels so the Hub will start the 5GHz service immediately and keep it operating all the time.

Use a Wi-Fi analyser app on a dual band mobile to confirm the VM Hub's 2.4 & 5 GHz WI-Fi services are operating.
