Exposed wire on fixed connection

I accidentally chopped through my outside virgin cable. An engineer came and fixed it, putting on the black connector (below, right). My connection works fine now. However, there is a second wire that he didn't connect up (bottom, left).

What is this wire used for? Is it safe to be exposed like that?

The smaller wire is the telephone wire. This is only used when the VM landline is presented on a standard master telephone wall socket. VM landlines are now provided from a socket on the back of the VM hub for new customers and existing customers, on the old landline system, are being moved over to the new system.

  • Right, thanks. So there is no issue with the exposed end of that cut wire being rained on covered in dirt etc?

      Hi a74nh,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us via the Community. It's lovely having you on board with us in the Forums.

We're sorry to hear the engineer didn't explain things more thoroughly when he was then reconnecting the cable you need for services. As mentioned by other users, the cable is for the old telephone connection however as we provide the telephone through the hub now, it's not needed.

It's not a live cable so is completely safe however if the end sticking out like that bothers you, feel free to cut it back as far as you can go, or cover with some tape. Dirt/rain on the cable, will not affect your services.

Please let us know if you have any further queries or questions.

      Thanks,

If you are not using it for a VM landline connection, the phone cable will not be in use. You could put a bit of insulating tape over the cut ends if you wanted it covered over.

VM's broadband/TV connection is fed via the coax cable which is now joined in the black waterproof gel box.

  • Thanks for the answers. I've covered it up in insulation tape now.
