1gb connection keeps dropping to outbuilding (Ethernet laid)

Hello

Hoping someone can shed some light on what may be happening with my set up. I've recently upgraded to full 1gb with a Hub 5. I've got a Cat 6 cable running from the back of the router outside to my outbuilding. The connection to my outbuilding seems to keep intermittently dropping, most notable when signed into a work VPN. Connection to the wider internet continues uninterrupted however when signed into a VPN connection seems to drop regularly. When inside my home connected to the Hub 5 via Wi-Fi I don't suffer any dropouts. I've also ran a few speed tests using the hard wired connection and also the Wi-Fi I have available in the outbuilding, both only come to around 40/50Mbps which again seems a bit off considering I'm on full fibre.

The cable was only laid around 12mths ago and isn't damaged. I have a standard TP-Link switch in the outbuilding and hard wire my machine into it. The only other device plugged into the switch is a Wi-Fi disc.

Very frustrating as the building is used for WFH and the drop outs are causing issues. All seems strange considering the router is brand new and the ethernet cable has only been laid for around 12mths.

Any ideas/suggestions as to what's going on here?

Thanks

40/50Mbps would be the expected speed for a Wi-Fi device on the 2.4GHz band.

You mentioned the Ethernet cable to the outbuilding, but once in the outbuilding what is on the end of that cable?

I.E. what make and model of Wi-Fi Access Point or Wi-Fi Router etc
is providing the Wi-Fi service to the devices in the outbuilding ?

There is a possibility that there is a problem with the cable, not all 8 wires connected or some making an intermittent connection. You really need to test the cable with a tester, they are very cheap on Amazon etc. if it’s not the cable then we need to look further, but this is the first step.

As per Tudor, investigate the cable and terminations and patch leads first of all.

Does the cable run in one continuous length from the hub location to the outbuilding?

I watched a YT video a little while ago showing an electrician using multiple cable joins and telephone crimps to install an ethernet connection to an outbuilding

This will show continuity of connection using a simple cable tester but the way it is joined will mean the cable is likely to give a poor quality connection (speed and reliability are likely to be below spec because of this method)

As said... but also check thet the switch isnt at fault - these are cheap to replace too

  • Hey Craig_M86, thank you for reaching out and a warm welcome to the community, we are sorry to hear you are having some connection issues.

We've taken a look at our side and the connection looks great, all your levels are great.

Can you try with the VPN to see if this makes a difference?

Get a better router with 1Gb ports and use hub in modem mode then see if that fixes it

  • Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

I’ve tested the Ethernet cable and that’s working as expected.

I have a Tp-link 5 port switch (TL-SG105E) that is connected to the cable running from the router, into that I have a BT whole home WiFi disc which provides the WiFi connection. The issue is occurring when a laptop is physically connected to either the switch or via WiFi, it doesn't seem to lose internet connection but will drop a VPN (used for work purposes) connection. Like I mentioned this only occurs in the outbuilding (more of a shed tbh!) and isn’t an issue when connected to the Hub5 indoors.

Wifi speed wise I’m getting around 600mbps download (not sure what happened to the other 400 I pay for mind you…) from the WiFi disc.

At a bit of a loss as it’s only dropping VPN connections out

600Mb over Wifi is not bad, VM only guarantee 30Mb over Wifi btw.  Which port is the switch connected to back at the Hub?  If it's using the 2.5Gb port, try another one as this particular port has been mentioned over various times as a bit problematic.  Otherwise it may be the switch and Hub don't quite match?

"Otherwise it may be the switch and Hub don't quite match?"

why would that be a problem I wonder...

"If it's using the 2.5Gb port, try another one as this particular port has been mentioned over various times as a bit problematic"

works fine with a router does it not...

  • So I've now unplugged the Wi-Fi and the switch and am directly plugged into the Ethernet port that runs direct from the Hub 5. I'll see how this goes over the next couple of days.

Instead of a switch & wifi pod do you think it would be best to get a new router with multiple ports on the back for out here, just thinking the less 'things' I have wired up the less the likelihood of one of them causing an issue. If so, what would people recommend to do the job?

You could use a Router set in Access Point mode.  As long as it has Gigabit ports and maybe Wifi 6 you should be good to go.  Some of the TP-Link ones are reasonable, or go to that well known auction site for a bargain perhaps?
