Recording and power on issues

I upgraded from an old v6 box a few months ago and struggling with new 360. Ever since day one I’ve had problems with bringing it out of standby. It often takes multiple presses of the remote over a few minutes to wake it up and sometimes even that isn’t enough. Then all I can do is power cycle it.

But now recordings are failing as well. I’ve been away for 10 days and on my return all scheduled recordings have failed and in all cases the reported error is “power failure”. I can’t believe there’s been a 10 day power cut in south London!

Are these known issues or have I got a faulty box?

  • Make sure the box is set to fast start or active start if it's set to eco start it's like turning the box off at the plug.

     

  • It was a conscious decision to select eco start. I have no issue with a slower startup the point is I’m getting no startup at all.

      Is it the led doesn't change from red to white.

      If you set the box to fast start or active start do you still have the same problems with slow start-up and recordings failing.

      Active start is the best compromise and doesn't use much more energy than the eco setting. If you try the other settings and still have problems then the box maybe faulty.

      If you are energy conscious when you were away did you power off the hub, that might have also caused the failed recording's due to the way 360 software works, recordings are on the box but the data is held on Virgin's servers so they both need to be able to communicate and if the box is set to eco then the 2 don't always connect that's why the box checks for updates when switched on for the TVGuide and software, when set to active mode these will happen overnight.

      We're sorry to hear you've been having issues with your 360 box. As mentioned by roy247, having the box on eco mode can affect the performance in terms of it needing to be connecting for recordings. Can you please try popping the box into fast or active start to see if this does make a difference on things?

  • Agree having both issues with turning on  as well as failed recordings too as box not coming out of standby even though box n mid power mode.

  • If the eco-mode doesn't work reliably then surely it should be removed from the menu (or fixed so it does actaully work)?

    My frustration with the other modes is they leave the bright red LED on all the time. It's a lot more obtrusive then the standby light on the old V6 box. Perhaps the solution is to stick some tape over it.

      Put some tape over the led if you want, the power used having the box set to active start over the eco mode was measured by another forum member some time ago and there wasn't much difference.

      The eco mode is probably working as it was designed to work, the horizon software that the 360 uses wasn't designed around a box that records, it was for streaming boxes in countries that allow cloud recordings which aren't allowed in the UK so the software was adapted to allow recordings on the box.

       

  • I’ve figured it out. It seems to be an interop problem with my hdmi switcher. If the switcher is on when the vm box comes out of standby it crashes and reboots or sometimes hangs indefinitely. I’ve found if I leave the switcher powered off and only turn it on once vm box is active then everything works fine. Bit annoying, but preferable to having the box crashing and restarting all the time.
