No Sound When Turning On (and other issues..)

I've got a Sony Sound bar connected to a Philips TV (HDMI 1) and the Virgin 360 also connected to the TV (HDMI 2).  I've got the 360 settings so that the remote controls the TV and sound bar.  Most of the time this works ok, but I have the problems below:

1. Always - When first switching on, I get no sound for about 5-7 seconds, the screen then goes black, then the picture comes back with sound (sometimes it flicks on and off a few times).  At this time, we get various messages on the screen such as 'HDMI connected', 'RC Passthrough active' and something about 'ARC'.  This is more annoying than anything else.

2.  Sometimes the above happens, but we get no sound whatsoever.  We either have to turn off/on again (which often doesn't work) or unplug the TV.

3.  Sometimes the TV looks as if it's going to turn on, but doesn't, and just switches off again....

4.  Can someone please explain the difference between the white and red on/off buttons?

It feels to me that the on/off sequence has to run in a precise format and that sometimes it doesn't quite manage it.  It all worked fine with the V6...

The white TV button turns your actual TV set on and off independently from the VM 360 box.

The red power button switches the 360 box on and off.

If you have enabled 'One Power' in the 360 settings (System > One Power) then the red power button enables you turn on connected devices at the same time as the 360 box providing they are compatable and connected using an HDMI cable.  The TV does need to have HDMI-CEC enabled for that function to work.

Some TV's have different naming conventions for HDMI-CEC.

For example LG TV's call it SIMPLINK. Philips TV's call it EasyLink. Samsung TV's call it Anynet+, Sharp TV's call it AQUOS, Sony's call it Bravia, and  some Toshiba's call it Regza

  • If your TV and soundbar are connected using the HDMI-eARC connections and one power is set to on, on the 360 then you only need to press the red power button on the 360 remote to power everything up, the white power button is for the TV only.

The messages you see on screen are probably more to do with the different manufacturers and how they manage the HDMI connections when syncing, my LG TV and soundbar using eARC power up with no problems the soundbar always displays a eARC message after a few seconds and the sound then goes off and on as everything syncs up again but no problem with the picture.

After 2 hours of experimenting today:

    1. When I turn on the TV the TV speaker sound is played for a few seconds, then it flicks a bit before silence...

    2. Messing around with the settings in the 360 settings menu seems to have no affect.

    3.  In the TV menu, if I manually change the audio output from HDMI output to TV speakers and back again, the sound bar starts to work.

    4. The red button on the 30 remote is working fine, I can hear the soundbar boombox humming when it turns on.

      Hi barra733 👋.

Thanks for reaching out to us, sorry to hear that you are having sound issues. Just to clarify the setup is HDMI from soundbar to TV HDMI (ARC), then another HDMI in available TV slots to the TV 360 box that you have. The sound settings on your TV should be output HDMI/ARC, should you still have no sound please let us know.

Yes, Soundbar HDMI to TV HDMI (ARC).  TV sound output is set to HDMI ARC.  Can get it to work by 'forcing' it in the TV settings, by switching between HDMI ARC to TV speakers, and then back to HDMI ARC, it then picks up the soundbar and works.  It seems these problems have only occurred since I installed the new 360 box and set up the 'one power' (no problems with the old set up).  It seems the 'handshake' between the TV, soundbar and 360 isn't happening correctly, or in the right order.
