Audio Issue?

Just started using the Virgin 360 this week and am having serious issues around the audio connections.

We have an LG 5.1 surround sound system that used to work perfectly prior to have the 360 handset in that when we started the TV and the Virgin box the surround sound box detected that we had turned everything on, started up & went straight to ARC.

Now with the 360 system the TV & the Virgin box start up and the surround sound system start and goes to Optical (with no audio output), bear in mind I have made no alterations other than installing the new 360 system.

I shouldn't have to go through all this when my system worked perfectly prior to installing 360!!!

When I look at my audio output on the TV it shows ARC but the front of the surround sound box shows Optical; this didn't occur prior to having 360.

I then have to go to the sound output setting on my TV to swap back to Internal Speakers then back to ARC before I get my surround sound back again; I have to do this every time I start the Virgin 360 system up and am not impressed as with our previous handset all worked as it should.

I went into Audio Settings in the 360 and changed to PCM 5.1 (HDMI only) but that hasn't helped.

Do you know how to solve my problem and if it can't be solved can I go back to the previous Virgin 'setup' and use our old handset as I'm not impressed with the 360 system.

By the way... does Virgin monitor these discussions as I hope they do?

Regards,

Richard

If you see Optical but get no audio it's because the active audio rail is HDMI. I assume you have a virtual surround sound. To fix this disable HDMI CEC on everything: the box (One Power in this case), the TV and the surround sound system. Set the 360's Audio output to "Follow content", check the TV's input mode is set to "HDMI" and its type is "ARC" or "HDMI ARC". Ensure box to TV's HDMI 1 and TV's ARC to surround sound are connected. Remove any Optical cable.

Now unplug everything from mains, wait about 30 seconds, then power up surround sound, TV and box (in that order).

  • One Power is enabled & our LG surround sound system shows Simplink, so no change there from it working with the previous Tivo handset & software.

It's just really frustrating that we have changed nothing (cables or connections) but the new 360 doesn't recognise what the Tivo did & I can't solve it.

I just think that the new 360 system doesn't recognise our LG surround sound system.

I'd quite happily go back to the Tivo setup as it worked.

"If it ain't broke then don't fix it" as the saying goes.

If you have enabled 'One Power' in the 360 settings (System > One Power) then the red power button enables you turn on connected devices at the same time as the 360 box providing they are compatable and connected using an HDMI cable.  The TV does need to have HDMI-CEC enabled for that function to work.

Some TV's have different naming conventions for HDMI-CEC.
For example LG TV's call it SIMPLINK. Philips TV's call it EasyLink. Samsung TV's call it Anynet+, Sharp TV's call it AQUOS, Sony's call it Bravia, and  some Toshiba's call it Regza.

The LG  5.1 surround sound system should be connected to the ARC port on your TV.
