Landline phone - no dial tone

I have had recent issues with my handset so have replaced with a new Vtech system (single handset and answering device).  When I plug the new handset into my DSL filter I get no dial tone.  Tried the old phone but no tone either.

What can I do two restore service?

  • Hey RichPR, thank you for reaching out and we are so sorry to hear about your landline issues.

Are the phones compatible with the new system?

So to confirm you cannot dial out or be called on this either?

Correct - note that I am using a DSL filter and plugging into the wall (as I have always done since the VM installation).  Is it possible that I need to plug into the router directly owing to a recent change?

Yes if you have been updated to the new VOIP update it needs to go through the router now not the wall.

Please try plugging the phone into the router, this should fix it.

  • OK I've ordered a new cable and - should arrive tomorrow - fingers crossed

The VTECH phone system should not need an ADSL filter / splitter to work on a VM Telephone wall socket.

You can check if the VM Hub is enabled for telephone from the admin menu's status page,
this is the first page after logon :

Telephone is not enabled on our VM Hub and it looks like this :

Thanks for this.  I have plugged the VTECH into the wall directly and there is no tone.  I have tried plugging into the router with the adapter - not luck either.  If anyone can help with instruction in accessing the VM Hub I'd be grateful.  Also, can I enable telephony via the menu or does Virgin need to do this?

As advised by Client62 you need to check for telephony being enabled. (When were you advised you'd be migrated to VoIP?) When it is then connect your phone to the hub's TEL 1 port with the RJ11 to BT adapter cable that you are getting.

To access the VM Hub menu got to : http://192.168.0.1/    Login using the HUB Password
this is printed on the bottom side label.   Note this is not the Wi-Fi Password.

When Telephone is enabled on a VM Hub the "RJ11 to BT socket adaptor" must be plugged into the VM Hub TEL 1 socket.

The Hub telephone service does not work if the adaptor is connected to TEL 2 or to any of the 4x network sockets.
