I would like to cancel both broadband and phone and port my phone number to a VOIP provider

After many years with Virgin I'm moving abroad and so I'd like to cancel all my services (broadband+ and phone) but I would also like to port my phone number to a VOIP provider so that I'll still be able to check on it from abroad in case someone calls me on that number (rare nowadays but who knows).

What is the correct procedure to be able to do so?

Reading other discussions it seems that I should just cancel the services and then, during the 30days notice period I should activate the portability request from the new VOIP provider.
Is this right? Can anyone from Virgin confirm it?
Unfortunately most other messages are from people moving to other UK providers but in my case I need to cancel the broadband for good.

Many thanks,

Charlie

  • Hello CharlieKonrad,

Welcome to the Community and thanks for taking the time to post here on the forums.

This would all depend on if we have a portability agreement with Voip providers as we don't have porting agreements with all telecoms providers in the UK. if you have a provider in mind we can check that for you from here before you submit a cancellation request. You can process the request as you have stated raise a disconnection with us and then arrange a port request to your new provider or you can arrange to port your number and then raise a cancellation after. There is a third option involving One Touch Switch but I'm not sure if VOIP providers are part of the One Touch Switch process.

  • Thanks Steven_L.

The provider I was thinking to use is called Andrews&Arnold (www.aa.net.uk) because they have a simple and low cost basic VOIP services that would be the equivalent of parking the phone number for some time to see who would still use it to call me.
I have checked on their website and they were supposed to be on One Touch Switch but it is not clear. Anyway from what I have heard, that process is about switching broadband but I am planning to only switch the phone number and cancel broadband as I'm leaving the country.

So a simple phone number portability check to A&A would be all I need.
I'll also ask the same question to them as soon as I can.

    Thanks,

    Charlie

I cancelled my Virgin media landline and moved/ported my number to A&A in October. It takes a week to move the number between virgin media and A&A.

So what I did was I gave my 30 days notice to virgin media (to cancel both internet and landline) and about 7 days before the cut off date I signed up to A&A's voip service. You'll have to give them the landline number and previous provider details. They'll contact virgin media and sort out the rest.

Thanks for coming back to us. As avi68 confirmed the transfer to A&A is possible. So you would be able to get your number ported over to them, you would need to raise a cancellation with us by calling through to our team on 0345 454 1111 and they will be able to get that part covered and then you would need to contact A&A to get the ball rolling from their side or you can do that the other way around and contact A&A first.

      Kind Regards,
